A little short notice I know ... I thought it'd be worth trying the experiment (we're following the monsterdon model for those who know of it)
I couldn't find what monsterdon model was, what is it?
Good question! It’s a movie watching thing done over on mastodon that’s been going for a while. Works pretty much like this, runs once a week I think, and is focused on classic/old monster Movies.
Here’s a quick explanatory post: https://hachyderm.io/@SnoopJ/111004128276431553
I could set up a synchronized watch party for this (complete with video player and live chat) on cytu.be if there's interest.
Cytube is a wonderful little FOSS webapp that displays a video (which can be a YouTube video, one on a number of other services, or a raw MP4 file hosted on an HTTPS server somewhere, which I could host) synchronized to everyone in the room and provides a chat box alongside it. It also supports custom chat emotes.
You don't need to create an account to watch or chat. You can just pull up a URL and the video will automatically start from where everyone else is, and if you type a username for yourself in the chat box you'll join chat as a guest.
I wholeheartedly encourage this!
It may be a bit late to get interest right now for this cycle/month (hope I'm wrong), in which case I/we may tap your shoulder next month, as this is still a bit of an experiment.
But as I'm not on top of that sort of thing and not in the major time zones, I'm not really placed to organise it ... so help and self-organisation is very much appreciated!
It shouldn't be too big of a deal for me. Just create a new account on Cytube (so I'm not using one linked to my real identity) and turn my HTTP server back on. I just so happen to have an MP4 copy of Big Trouble In Little China already downloaded. All you'd have to do is update this post with a link to the Cytube room.
One thing, though -- I am going to spend all day tomorrow on an airplane so if you could push this out to the day after I'd be able to help.

Yea, we can do it tomorrow ... or do "another one" for those who want to do the proper "live watch" thing.
If you're happy to lock down a time (at least roughly so) ... we can put a link in this post to it (I'm more than happy to do that) ... and/or a new post.
If you don't have a link on hand now (because you haven't set it up), that's ok too ... you could write a post to this community for your cytube room session, edit it as needed, and I can put a link to it in this post.
I would not be averse to doing two back to back days, one with Cytube and one without. I am flexible time wise although I am in Pacific time (UTC-7, 3 hours behind Eastern), or will be as of Jul 29. I do not have a link yet but it would not be hard to create one. They take the form https://cytu.be/r/[name] where [name] is any user-defined string of alphanumeric plus dashes and underscores (iirc). I'll leave it open to suggestions what name I should go with.
One other thing is that exhibiting a movie in this way, much like streaming it via Discord etc., is technically piracy even if the person hosting the MP4 file legally owns it (which I, erm, don't), but I doubt most Lemmings will care.
Cool! Best thing is probably for you to make a post when you have details and we can pin and link as needed.
I’ve edited this post with a mention that you intend to organise this.
