In 50 years this quote will be in textbooks and students will wonder how people nowadays could not see the signs

[-] Speculater@lemmy.world 95 points 3 months ago

Well it'll either be in the chapter:

How Trump Saved America, The South Has Risen

Or

Democracy Survived, How America Repelled a Fascist

[-] todd_bonzalez@lemm.ee 79 points 3 months ago

Or possibly: The Fall of the American Empire

[-] Entropywins@lemmy.world 34 points 3 months ago

The fall of the American republic...the fall of the empire comes a bit later

[-] bouh@lemmy.world 28 points 3 months ago

Well, there's Hitler who did exactly the same: publish a book, try not one but several coups, still get named chancelier legally. In France we like them too: we have 2 Napoléon who did the same thing. It almost happened another time in 1958, but the man they put in power was reasonable for once.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 22 points 3 months ago

"I just wanted fiscal responsibility!1!" says man that wasted money on Trump merch.

[-] Luvs2Spuj@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

It might be, but he has so many quotes that you could say this about.

[-] Technus@lemmy.zip 127 points 3 months ago

If you're a leftist in the US and you want to really scare the shit out of conservatives, get a gun and learn how to use it.

If they ever manage to take away our voting rights, they're not gonna give them back just cause we asked nicely.

[-] Deestan@lemmy.world 55 points 3 months ago

A-ha but if I call out a contradiction in their opinions surely they will fold.

[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 35 points 3 months ago

Just let them gain power for a short time and people will see their true face and not vote for them again. Worked in Germany. The NSDAP never got a majority of votes.

[-] nicknonya@lemmy.blahaj.zone 53 points 3 months ago

the nazi occupation being notably bloodless and easy to get rid off..

[-] Deestan@lemmy.world 26 points 3 months ago

And allow them to get their message out on every possible platform all the time. This will not normalize hate speech and recruit members at all but will make people will see they are evil and ignore at them until they evaporate.

[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 13 points 3 months ago

Did you know that the leader of the NSDAP took his life once he realized that he has failed? While this is a sad fate of an individual, it tells alot about how people can be chastened not by silencing them but quite the opposite way.

[-] Silic0n_Alph4@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

Even better - the leader of the NSDAP killed Hitler! Truly a hero of democracy 🫡

Doesn't work. I have several. And I have a concealed carry. A conservative knowing these things has never been scared. They use it as an excuse to pull out theirs because they think like children and have to show and tell. Even if it's in a public place, like the damn corner of a courthouse. Which is not the kind of place a responsible adult should ever reveal a weapon.

I have a concealed curry, in case me wife eats it

You're a fucking coward and would run as soon as you heard a gunshot, just like every gun-owning coward in the US 😂

[-] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 33 points 3 months ago

Running is a very good strategy. In non-stand your ground states if you have the opportunity to run you have a legal obligation to. It means you aren't in immediate danger. In a stand your ground state you have the option to run. But if the person shooting isn't visible then sneaking around with a gun trying to find them is how a good-guy with a gun ends up dead like John Hurley.

Part of being a responsible gun owner is knowing when to run.

Are you a pirate that is just always prepared to celebrate your wife's death with a tasty noodle or rice dish?

Also, learn how to fly drones if you can, if (when?) things go shit-fan-hitting globally, that seems like a really useful skill to have in your group, considering how the face of warfare looks at the moment.

With a quick reminder: If you in any way can, don't do this solo, connect with others, don't get arrogant about it, either. The fascist preppers have a huge weakness in their narcissistic individualist "I am better than the sheep" prepping style. Being able to actually support and organise a community in the potentially coming chaos is important.

[-] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 97 points 3 months ago

It makes me so mad when people pretend that we shouldn't take this seriously. Aaaand even if he hadn't already promised to become a fascist dictator, taking the shit he says seriously in that scenario would still be better than not taking it seriously in the scenerio where he has already promised to become a fascist dictator, which is the scenario we are living.

[-] cogman@lemmy.world 66 points 3 months ago

He literally rallied a violent mob to try and overturn the last election.

Like, you have to be a moron to think he's "joking" about trying to be a fascist dictator.

[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 79 points 3 months ago

Saying the quiet part out loud...

[-] nicknonya@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 3 months ago

seriously it's like those newspapers that reported the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand as good for global peace

[-] Midnitte@beehaw.org 9 points 3 months ago

Or just the numerous attempts against Hitler, including one the year before he took power.

[-] abfarid@startrek.website 27 points 3 months ago

I watched the video itself. He barely mentioned it and it pretty obviously was one of his on-the-spot incoherent ramblings that he was just trying to form into a somewhat coherent thought. But the media and memes have been milking it for 3 days straight. That was a 1-day milk, 2-day at most. I'm sure he has done something moronic more recently, let's move on.

[-] RupeThereItIs@lemmy.world 57 points 3 months ago

Why would we move on from his admitting to what we all know, his goal is the end of our Republic.

What the hell are you talking about, we should NOT move on, that's been the problem all along.

[-] flicker@lemmy.world 32 points 3 months ago

"Sure, there's a whole written plan about this you can read for yourself on the internet, but he barely mentioned that he has a plan to become a dictator. It doesn't really mean you should care." - that asshole, probably

[-] flicker@lemmy.world 21 points 3 months ago

Wait I have another one.

"I mean, he's just rambling incoherently. It doesn't mean we shouldn't give him access to our nuclear arsenal." - that same asshole, almost certainly

I'm honestly baffled by how many upvotes this take is getting. "Let's move on from Trump's fascist rhetoric" is not a take I would expect to be popular with this community.

Casual complacency when faced with actual dictator rhetoric? Bold strategy.

[-] todd_bonzalez@lemm.ee 22 points 3 months ago

Yeah man, a presidential candidate with a real chance of winning is telling his base that he'll get rid of elections as president, and this is something that his biggest wealthiest supporters actually want him to do. Multibillion dollar right-wing think tanks that work directly with him are openly discussing how the "Democratic experiment" has failed, and that Washington should be "burned to save America".

He checks off just about every other box on the fascism checklist too, including genocide...

But I would hate to overreact, so I'll just pretend it didn't happen.

You're one of those people that believes you shouldn't believe someone when they tell you who they are.

Can I borrow $50?

[-] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 3 months ago

Aaaaaand that's how you end up with an authoritarion fascist regime.

Up the shut fuck.

Don't know how credible this article is, but I will post this just in case: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/27/us/politics/trump-votes-christians.html

[-] princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 3 months ago

I mean it's the NYTimes. I don't necessarily like their editorial biases, but I trust them on statements of fact like definitively saying Trump said x, because I trust them to not want to be sued for libel.
