Terrifying (hexbear.net)
submitted 3 months ago by Gorb@hexbear.net to c/games@hexbear.net

Done all from memory no googling. My friends think I'm weird for remembering a snippet of a wall texture for a game i played 10 years ago. Or even worse, remembering a wall texture for a game i haven't even played.

Anyone else played guess the game?

Is this really just exactly what it sounds like...?? They show you a screenshot and you guess the game it's from?

I have great visual memory but would be absolute ass at this. My gaming knowledge is limited to Mario, Elder Scrolls, The Sims, and Cities: Skylines.

How are you so good at it? Great visual memory and great breadth of gaming experience?

Some notable examples, although i found these quite easy except for fear cos they're generally iconic in design especially the deus ex skybox

Quake and Doom I probably would have figured out, but man, no way I would have figured out all of these.

Yep its 6 screenshots that get progressively easier. The first one is usually a really small snippet of something hard to identify although the difficulty varies greatly. Some will have entire chunks of UI showing which is easy to identify and others will be some blurry floor texture. I managed to get one guess first try which was Fear, the screenshot i couldn't even tell what was on the screen but i identified it by the crosshair that was showing. I'm a freak fr fr.

I have very good visual memory but also a hyper fixation on games. I can usually recall when and where something happened and where i was standing and how everything looked. I've also played hundreds throughout my life. It helps that the site mostly shows popular games with the occasional obscure title which i don't usually get.

🤯 that is wild

I am genuinely so impressed that you can do that. That is amazing.

Pretty much yeah. Having gaming as your primary hobby for your whole life helps too. And being interested in game design and other nerd aspects of it helps. You can often get these purely by deduction even if you're not familiar with the specific game at all. Texture quality says it's from this era, maybe this specific console. Color palette looks like this series, the person responsible for the art direction on that series also worked on xyz, etc etc.

If you're the kind of nerd I am, you generally know of almost all popular games ever made even if you haven't played many of them.

Yeah I do deduction a lot. Like identify the genre, engine, era, console usually narrows it down quite a lot

[-] the_itsb@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

that is fucking impressive

I don't generally like watching other people play games, but I would love to watch someone with that kind of obscure knowledge play something like this. Competency is so cool, especially when it's with something absolutely mind-boggling, like this.

You should check out Northernlion's videos labeled "Miscellaneous" for the parts where he does the movie one. Because he's basically like this with movies, I've seen him nail some old shitty movies no one's ever heard of based on the day it hit theaters, how much money it made, and what studio was behind it.

He's also pretty good at the gaming ones for obvious reasons but movies and TV are where he really shines

There's also a kinda similar game called Gamedle which has different "modes". Pretty fun and I almost always play these back to back. (Thanks Northernlion)

I've played underground so many times and didn't recognise that at all. Given the surroundings were always covered in intense motion blur
