Surely this can't be caused by the biggest economies in the world relying on "clean" natural gas (that is, 99% methane) instead of "dirty" coal... Right?

From Oil and gas companies not maintaining their pipelines and it leaking during transit, yes.

Biggest emissions in the US are around fracking sites.
