5th circuit. They're teeing up for SCOTUS.

[-] APassenger@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago

The 5th gets scolded by SCOTUS. That's not a predictor, but they aren't upheld as much as many think.

[-] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 57 points 3 months ago

so many good cops, but what does it matter if half of ya are absolute cowards .

"But it's just a few bad apples...." /s

Like, yeah, maybe. But the expression is "one bad apple spoils the whole barrel"

[-] thefartographer@lemm.ee 24 points 3 months ago

Wait, that's the full expression??

I thought it was "one bad apples seeds the union before retiring on full pension after paying out victims' families using tax dollars"

We should really rethink how we select and train these police if we've been using that phrase wrong!

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 13 points 3 months ago

The expression must have lost some of its original meaning in translation lol

[-] snooggums@midwest.social 5 points 3 months ago

The expression really pulled itself up by the bootstraps.

[-] orcrist@lemm.ee 1 points 3 months ago

The cowards are not the problem. The liars, murderers, and criminals are the problem.

[-] Beaver@lemmy.ca 31 points 3 months ago

The republicans in court are going to use the “but the camera is too far away to able to identify police abuse”

[-] snooggums@midwest.social 13 points 3 months ago

Which is combined with the regular "you don't know what happened before filming" is even worse.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 3 months ago

Can't have more videos like the ones that make people angry about our out-of-control police getting out.

[-] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago

So I wonder who's going to build a phone with a built in range finder.

[-] Quexotic@infosec.pub 11 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

There's actually a way to do that now.

Use this filter in the BLE radar app: 00:25:DF:*

That hex sequence is used exclusively by the taser company who happens to make all of the cameras for almost all of the police.

It works fairly effectively, it spotted cops for me while I was driving past them on the freeway so I think that's probably pretty good.

[-] 5redie8@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago

Why would a taser have Bluetooth??

[-] Quexotic@infosec.pub 3 points 3 months ago

Taser is a brand name. They make the body cams too. Body cams gave BLE radios. I think the sub brand of the cameras is Axon.

I'm pretty sure the weapons don't have any BLE devices in them.

[-] 5redie8@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago

Huh, TIL they own Axiom. Super interesting, thanks!

[-] Quexotic@infosec.pub 2 points 3 months ago

You are quite welcome internet friend!

[-] GBU_28@lemm.ee 2 points 3 months ago

Interesting topic. Please say more, line what exact app you use? I didn't see BLE radar but find many like it... Which one is legit

[-] Quexotic@infosec.pub 1 points 3 months ago

Sorry about that I didn't realize that it was listed in the store as Bluetooth radar. The app shows up in the system as BLE radar. Here's the actual link to the precise app.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=f.cking.software

Here's a screenshot of the description in Google Play:

Here's a screenshot of the configuration that will find taser branded devices:

And if you don't trust the Google Play store you can also find it in the standard F-Droid repository:

Absolutely! Happy to help!

Apes together strong.

[-] Freefall@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago

They can't hide things if it is on film! Gosh derned kids! It's not like they can change their behavior, sheesh!

[-] teamevil@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

Jesus, arrest all of them trying to make the police more immune to laws we face

[-] Eezyville@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

Arrest Trump then? Well he hasn't been sentenced yet so it's bound to happen.

[-] teamevil@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

I mean we don't need to "come up" with anything, just make that asshole face the consequences of his actions...also lock up Cannon, she's not fit to for public service.

25 feet is about 9 steps away. Not super terrible, but as the article states, the cop is likely to decide 25 feet is how ever far he says it is.

I actually agree that there should be some distance on the books, so a cop doesn't have to worry about getting shoved or attacked or whatever while they're dealing with someone else, but 25 feet is a bit excessive.

[-] orcrist@lemm.ee 15 points 3 months ago

You think there should be some distance on the books, but in point of fact the courts have already ruled in Arizona that you can't put a set distance into law, not legally. The first amendment protects gathering news, which includes watching over the government, and any restrictions on the First Amendment have to be narrowly tailored to achieve their objectives. That is why we already have laws such as interference and obstruction. If you actually do something that prevents the cops from doing their job, it's already a crime.

The other problem with the set number of feet failed laws is abuse by police. The cops will say they felt you were too close, and that gives them reasonable suspicion to detain you and possibly probable cause to arrest you. Even if video evidence later shows that you were far enough away, you already took the ride. And what happens when a cop moves toward you? If you don't back up fast enough, arrested. Even if the cop has no reason to move toward you, and it looks like entrapment, too bad. You'll have to prove your own innocence.
