It's not a real Internet service until it has furries on it.
RIP Deviantart
Does nobody check the permission requirements before installing the app that quite literally steals all their data. Like every data tracking option including “other” is selected by the app, it’s so invasive they cannot launch in Europe, but people are choosing to install it?
Yea the fact this cannot even be released in the EU is one of the biggest red flags I have ever seen yet loads of people seem to not care at all. 🤷♂️
Yep agreed. EU is doing good work with there privacy stuff (of course things can always be better). If they can expand on it and make things even more strict that's good to.
If only North America would follow. But ya if it's not installable in EU do you really want to install it? It's alo Meta who legit would ask for your blood eveyweek if they could.
No thanks.
Let me preface this by saying that I hate Facebook just as much as other people. But this is partially false, they just haven't been approved to release there YET getting that approval takes time. Time that Facebook didn't have if they wanted to release quickly.
No that’s fair. You’re right that it isn’t being actively blocked or anything, but Facebook themselves have not launched it because they know the privacy issues are pretty big and they could easily run afoul of the law there.
Obviously not to say they never will launch there, but I’d imagine there’s some significant changes that need to be made before that’s allowed.
Regardless, only time will tell, and I’m sure Facebook won’t lose the opportunity to expand. And like you said, time definitely played a part in this, I’m sure given more time we would have seen a launch all at once.
No approval is needed to launch a service in Europe. Them not launching simply means they know it is not regulation compliant.
Anyone can release an app in Europe no prior approval required. I’m using over 250 apps currently on my phone and have used thousands others in the past. All of these apps either operated inside the law or at least “pending a lawsuit”, as is customary in silicon valley. The chances of this lawsuit materializing and Facebook thinking it would lose this hypothetical lawsuit must be astronomical if they chose not to launch.
@RemeJuan Apparently not. I wouldn't install or use anything that smacks of Meta for this reason. Its why I left Reddit when Apollo shut down. Big nope for me.
Why do people forget that Meta is primarily an advertisement company. Each and every one of their platforms is made purely for data harvesting. Of course it would be sanitised for the advertisers.
Also it’s an half baked app which was made in a hurry and it’s just opportunistic.
I don't understand people obsession with nudity on general-purpose social media
For me, its because its the canary. If no porn, then probably too corporate for real discussion
this is actually a pretty good take imo
As much as I dislike porn (exploitation industry etc) this is a good take.
This is legitimately the best take here.
This is truly an amazing take
Look the ppl follow the porn js
Because like it or not, the Internet is for porn.
I don't understand people's obsession with assuming that having a passing interest in something society frowns upon means they're obsessed with it.
I doubt it would overwhelm threads in any meaningful way, unless it just happened to have a perfect storm of features that appealed to pornographers. So their view that "You can't do that! It's not right!" seems like they're not really aiming to make a service that people can use... but a product they can sell to advertisers. Not that I doubted that anyone thought it'd be any different.
The thing is, you can have both. You just have to not go whole hog on either. You have to find a middle ground.
I'm here for my hobbies, which typically don't involve naked people. I liked tumblr back in the day because of the really strong underground music scene on it, but it just vanished all at once when they changed the rules. Really bummed me out since I made some good friends and was able to promote my music really well there.
Forget the porn, no corporate can ever have safe harbor for my desire of sailing in the high seas. No I will not download your app, but I will download a car, and torrents.
Remember, meta's VR chat clone died due to the fact that nothing below the chest was allowed. This was specifically because they didn't want any avatar to be able to use anything between their knees and bellybutton for NSFW purposes.
I don’t know about everyone else but my timeline (?) on Threads is all men posting their ass on main. Not sure how strong the guidelines are being enforced at this point, but I’m not complaining.
My understanding was they lacked an active moderation team at launch. Everything is automated
Would make sense. They probably rushed the launch with the whole Twitter drama going on
Can't make a Tumblr mistake if you just rip the bandaid off at launch (maybe)
Tumblr will get federated with Threads.
- That's interesting! I was talking about this https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/06/style/tumblr-porn.html
Well, in many countries Twitter is the fastest way to get hooked to an escort
This is a really interesting theory. Maybe you could go into more detail to clear things up.
Go on...
Real talk, is WhatsApp more than just a text message replacement to people? I see it get brought up in talks about social media and I get very confused.
In a lot of countries, entire businesses rely on it as a complimentary and necessary form of quick internal communication. Easy to form groups and share images/videos on the fly.
Overseas the app is the main platform for people to stay connected through text and voice messages too.
This. I do a lot of consulting for Korean companies and they live out of WhatsApp for all their business comms/file sharing similar to Slack.
India has a real issue of forwarding misinformation on WhatsApp. And people getting added to group chats like telegram channels
You can post stories on WhatsApp.
I love that this is the actual title of the article, lol.
So, it sounds like the real Twitter killer will be BlueSky (if they allow NSFW).
Yeah Bluesky allows NSFW and is pretty great, the only issue is that they're currently restricting it to a tiny number of users. Hopefully people people get annoyed at threads over time and are eager to rush to Bluesky when it becomes available rather than just getting used to the problems.
I'm thinking about filling the gap in the market by starting a social media called #turds. Can I get an amen?
