Obviously. It's linked to Instagram, so it's gonna be a another playground for "influencers" to milk their fans.

One more reason not to federate with them.

This strategy sounds perfect: ensuring Threads isn't the destination of choice for serious discussion. Thanks for sentencing your new product to death, Adam.

Yeah! A great way instantly destroy the value of it for a bunch of Twitter subcultures like Politicians, Journalists, Media outlets in general.

Like, what's the point of this app and the launch window if you're instantly going to turn off lots of prominent users?

Sidenote: I would not trust Meta at all regarding ads and politics, we've seen in the last five years on why not.

Of course not it's to collect all your data as much as possible and sell to the highest bidder. Wonder Meta hasn't bought out one of those ancestry companies so they can start collecting people physical data along with their digital.

Be pretty simple force them to have a Facebook account and or Threads and man the data they could get.

Because basically its what they want with their terms of use.

"Wonder Meta hasn't bought out one of those ancestry companies so they can start collecting people physical data along with their digital."

Shhhh...don't give them any ideas.

I swear if they really wanted to, they could do that and build a database on par with federal government departments.

[-] JackGreenEarth@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Make it open source and searchable, and they could fuck up society.

[-] Funwayguy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Just pull another Cambridge Analytica with it and watch the world burn. The shady siphoning of data for years until the secret leaks would skyrocket everyone's anxiety about who had what and questioning everything around them all while conspiracies spiral out of control. If it were searchable at least you'd know, but this way the unknown would be so much worse.

Have fun with that mental image.

People whose entire existence is inherently political: "oh great."

Only mindless drivel is allowed here on Threads. Please continue consuming and not thinking.

[-] meggied90@vlemmy.net 6 points 1 year ago

It feels like if Twitter and LinkedIn had a baby, it would be Threads.

Wow, didn't think of that! Yeah, feels like that. Worst of both worlds.

Make no mistake threads will still be political. It's not like they're gonna start banning people for linking CNN articles.

But I bet dollars to donuts when they do ban people for whatever they consider 'too much' it's not gonna come down failry will it?

Instagram’s new Threads app is “not going to do anything to encourage” politics and “hard news,” Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said in a Threads conversation with The Verge’s Alex Heath.

...

The Instagram boss later clarified his initial response, stating that while Threads won’t “discourage or down-rank news or politics,” it won’t “court” them as Facebook has in the past. “If we are honest, we were too quick to promise too much to the industry on Facebook in the early 2010s, and it would be a mistake to repeat that,” Mosseri said.

Step 1: "If we just ignore the 800 pound gorilla in the room it will go away, so anyone discussing the gorilla will be banned."

Step 2: "Nobody could have known there was an 800 pound gorilla running around breaking people's arms! To better protect our customers we've seized control of everyone's arms. [High fives all around]."

But what exactly is it for? To have superficial conversations about how tasty their food was? Then it won't work. All meaningful conversation is inherently political. We just need a good platform where parties can talk to each other with respect.

This was posted yesterday, but definitely should be in this thread, as well: Facebook's Threads is so depressing

[-] wh3resmym1nd@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

I really love that the post is called, "Facebook's Threads". I really hate the rename to Meta, because all it is, is just a smart rebrand to swindle the mainstream users into trusting them.

Disgusting.

For creating propaganda and extremist subcultures. Hell, I've seen how groups like LibsOfTikTok and MothersForLiberty already spearheading the charge exactly for what Threads wants for this sludge of a platform. And the federation with the Fediverse is just tons of inhuman refuse waiting to pour in
