Like a lot of the new users here I too am a former Redditor. I was on Reddit for 15 years, it was my main source of news and information. I didn't agree with many of the changes to reddit but kept on, till recently when I learned the app I'd been using "Infinity" would no longer work, I guess that was the final straw, but as the title suggests I'm glad. I started looking for other sources of information and entertainment which led to lemmy and the fediverse. I also found other content creators on platforms like patreon, substack, discord, mastodon, that I may not have found otherwise if I was still on Reddit. Just felt like sharing, thank you for reading this, hope you all have a wonderful day.

Glad you found a home here. FYI the spiritual successor for Infinity has a lemmy app called Eternity

[-] cmoney@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Eternity is awesome!

[-] grill@thelemmy.club 7 points 1 year ago

Wow thank you! Finally app let's me swipe between posts.

[-] ConstipatedWatson@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I couldn't find Eternity through the search feature of the Google Play Store, but your comment pushed me to look for it better via Google search. Here it is.

I'll test it in the next few days. I haven't found a simple app that works for me yet (but maybe this time it's a charm). I use Jerboa, Liftoff and Connect for different features, because none of them has them all (and I didn't fall in love with Sync)

Eternity is still a work in progress, but it's very good, and getting better all the time. If you liked Infinity, you'll like Eternity .

I've been using Eternity for a week now and am honestly blown away! I believe their settings are a bit confusing, but they are granular and allow you to customize the app a lot. The final result is really nice. I got it to look similar to what RIF for Reddit was for me, while also trying out some new changes I like. Other apps are nice, for example Liftoff's interface for settings is the best I've seen in any app, since it shows a pictorial demo of what the settings you've chosen will look like.

Edit: clarified last sentence

Welcome to the non-corporate Internet!

That’s just the background federation-radiation emanating off of the html math the open source guys put into place when building Lemmy. I’m the only non-programmer here but they’ll back me up and confirm, for sure. Something about how blockchain and the cloud create a cyber container when enough githubs connect to the activity pub rss feeds if I’m following it right.

The heating bill didn't get paid this month. Buckle up, its going to be a ride!🤷🏾‍♂️

[-] PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago

Oh that's my bad. Hookers and blow, you know.

[-] Jamesbong@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Me too. I actually don't use reddit anymore outside of work. I was so sad to not use Apollo anymore (one of the best ios apps in terms of ui ux).

Anyway. Reddit died long ago. We just didn't notice.

[-] nyn@feddit.de 9 points 1 year ago

In case you didn't know it already: There is a app called Eternity for Lemmy that is pretty much Infinity but for Lemmy

[-] DonutGalaxy@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 year ago

Eternity is the best!

The change here hasn't been that bad other than half of the user base literally shitting themselves if you mention ads or windows. It's also sad missing out on some smaller communities that don't exist here yet and the amount of content, but it's nice at the same time because I waste less time scrolling through.

Just block linux communities, it's been quite the improvement of my personal experience. Nothing against linux communities, they are just not my people.

I was there since... I actually dont remember. This was 2 accounts before my current account. It was back when the slashdot 2 redesign came out and pissed everyone off. I think that was 2011? Currently I have 100k+ karma on my newest reddit account and looked elsewhere the moment I realized they were about to effectively kill the site with this boneheaded decision. I watched Slashdot and digg become irrelevant and were probably witnessing Reddit becoming irrelevant too. It used to be one of the most expansive sites that you could create your own content bubble on and then Reddit basically killed apps and although I rarely used them, the effect of others effectively being driven off the site had a huge impact. Reddit is a husk of what it once was and I have never seen anything even approaching this in all the time I have been there. Unfortunately we are in the zone of pain where Reddit's ability to generate content collapsed AND alternatives like Lemmy haven't caught on enough to bridge the gap... yet.

[-] devious@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately there's still two small communities that have no presence on Lemmy for me, so I still occasionally visit reddit - but only in read only mode!

[-] PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 year ago
[-] krayj@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

That's what I did, but the community is too niche to have any activity on Lemmy. A LOT of niche community users are in the same scenario.

[-] PseudoSpock@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 year ago

You have to invite them to the dark side... "We have cookies!"

[-] Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 year ago

Welcome!

If you want to find interesting communities, check the Lemmyverse. If your favorite niche doesn’t have a community, don’t hesitate to make one.

Can you still do this if you're permabanned?

[-] detalferous@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

Oo. Great question. Probably not.

But you can still submit a privacy act request for all of your data to be deleted. My understanding is that such protection exists in the EU, UK, and California.

[-] jcit878@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

can confirm you cannot. I can't even edit my old comments

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Interesting. I can still edit my comments despite the admin ban.

[-] jcit878@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

huh. every time i try to go to my profile i just see that 'this account has been suspended' message covering the whole screen, i cant even look at my comments

edit: i checked i can edit a comment, if i can find it (eg by going to my 'replies', checking context and i can go ahead and edit my comment). but no way to just go to all comments and look for something specific, without manually finding threads through google or something

[-] Ardenwolfe@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

You could try deleting your account on Old Reddit instead. I know deleting while suspended works, but I'm unsure about being permanently banned. Still, it couldn't hurt to try.
