  • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Tabak Oridjinal, now with 28 mm Gelousy knot
  • Razor: F. Rolli Rolli's Hollow Ground 5/8" (carbon steel, barber's notcho)
  • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Post Shave: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

This little Rolli was produced right here in the old town of Lausanne, 5 minutes on foot from my apartment sometime before 1937. It's in surprisingly great condition and I enjoy the mix of modern and old styles: The barber's notch and the prominent etching on the face are clearly inspired by Sheffield razors of the second half of the 19th century while the fully chamfered spine and the transition from the chamfer to the square cross section of the tang can often be seen on modern (i.e., first half of the 20th century and later) German straight razors. I'm also amused by the mismatch between the small size (5/8") and these design cues from much larger razors. The mirror finish is also neat.

I prefer larger blades, but great shaves like today's make me think I might not have right reasons for this preference.

We always tend to prefer larger things despite it actually being a matter of how well you can handle what you've got 👀

Btw, nice time see you've been able to fit a new knot to your Dogwood brush!

Yes, I stuck a Gelousy in there. It's a nice knot, but definitely a lot floppier than I'd like. I keep postponing pulling it back out and drilling a deeper bore hole to set it at a lower loft 😅

[-] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

You prefer a firmer brush I reckon. I like mine a bit floppier, but that's due to the nature of head shaving.

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

I can appreciate a softer brush (eg, my extra soft Zenith horse) but I do prefer a bit of backbone, yeah.

[-] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

I'm still very interested in trying one of the extra soft Zenith horse brushes, but since all my experiences with horse hair were a tangled up mess that had to be tossed out soon, I'm kinda worried...

Do you want to try mine? I'd be happy to send you mine

[-] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

Thanks but I have to politely decline. Currently it's not a good time to possibly add another brush to the mix; maybe someday in the future. I highly appreciate your kind offer though ✌🏻

If you change your mind I'm the future, don't hesitate to let me know

  • Brush: Wald Stratos Haunter 29mm A1

  • Razor: Koraat 6/8" Full Hollow

  • Lather: WestMan Shaving - Nirvana - Soap

  • Toner: Thayers - Lavender - Toner

  • Aftershave: WestMan Shaving - Nirvana - Aftershave Balm

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

My submission for Theme Thursday. I figured I'd see @sahenders@sub.wetshaving.social using it as well.

[-] sahenders@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

Funny enough, Alma and Nirvana were both in the running. I made a last minute decision to use Braeburn.

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

Alma was on my list, along with SV Opuntia and Ethos Succès.

I have some soaps from Los Jabones de Joserra coming. Have you tried any of Joserra’s soaps?

[-] sahenders@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

That's a brand I haven't tried anything from yet. There are a couple scents that look interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out for some deals.

Theme Thursday - Mental Health Day

These scents take me to my happy place. I took some inspiration from @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social with pairing Braeburn and Dickens.

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

braeckens++; such a nice combo

And Rocca ++;, too!

I got this brush yesterday after winning it in a raffle. I bought about as many raffle tickets as the brush is worth, but I'll still take the win!

I really like this type of knot. It's very similar to the Maggard Synthetic which is my most-used knot. This one seems softer and nicer overall, but the loft is lower than I'm used to. I emailed Peter (super nice guy, by the way) at Wolf Whiskers to see if it's epoxied or not, in hopes I can adjust the loft. I'm expecting him to respond saying it's not removable, but at least I tried.

The shape "Gianmaria" is new and not listed on his website. It's a very nice shape and I wouldn't be surprised if he adds it to his repertoire.

Congrats on the new brush, looks really beautiful and luxurious! 👌🏻

10.10.2024 - Guess it's a Indigo Day

  • Prep: warm water
  • Brush: AP Shave Co. black & clear handle w/ 30 mm Tuxedo Fan knot
  • Razor: Stando Perun
  • Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Indigo
  • Post-Shave: OAM sensitive skin toner; Phytorelax Aftershave scalp cream

-> 1-pass head shave. Cool and good.

Some soaps are used too rarely by me; HoM Indigo is such a case. While I really love the smokey blueberry scent and like the Tusk base a lot, somehow it's underutilized. Well, today was one of the days were I finally reached for it again and surely, it didn't disappoint.

OAM toner really goes well with a lot of different things tbh, the scent is rather versatile. Coupled with the Phytorelax cream it pushed everything in a sweeter direction, but oh well. Everything still feels nice.

4/5 early shifts done. My new colleagues from the new station are rather nice, surprisingly I get along at least on a superficial basis with almost everyone at my workplace. It definitely was one of my best decisions ever to change jobs in the middle of my retraining. However, I am glad when this week is finally over - early shifts leave me constantly tired and with very low energy.

Indigo is like that for me, too.
