  • Brush: Maggard 24mm 2 Band Badger
  • Razor: Gillette Slim Adjustable (I-2)
  • Blade: Bolzano Superinox (Germany) (3)
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Gin & Tonic - Soap
  • Post Shave: Old Spice - Hawkridge - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Harry's - Aftershave Balm

Is Stirling so good because it's excellent soap, or is it so good because I use it frequently and know exactly how to lather it? Probably the first thing.

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 6 points 1 month ago

I consider Stirling as a dependable option. I have a bunch of tubs of it that I know I will never finish nor sell.

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 4 points 1 month ago

It's truly amazing how Stirling just keeps standing the test of time 😅

Oct 13, 2024 - Rinse. Repeat.

  • Brush: Stirling Soap Co. Green & Ivory 24mm Synthetic 2-Band Synthentic Knot
  • Razor: Karve Shaving Co. Overlander
  • Blade: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Stainless (Green) [2]
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Beloved - Soap
  • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Hallows - Splash
  • Fragrance: Hermès - Terre d’Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver - Eau de Parfum

Same setup as yesterday. Just as good.

The Stirling Synthetic "2-Band" is an excellent synth. Mine stays in my suitcase and gets used whenever I'm on the road for work.

[-] sahenders@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

Same, I'm traveling this weekend

  • Brush: Yaqi - Mysterious Space 24mm 2-band badger
  • Razor: Rockwell - 6C (R4 + R2 plate)
  • Blade: Astra - Superious Platinum (1)
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Le Grand Chypre
  • Post: Osma alum block
  • Post: Nivea - Sensitive Post Shave Balm
  • Post: Stirling -Ramblin' Man AS splash

I didn't have time to shave until late today, it was a super busy Sunday. Le Grande Chypre gave me an excellent lather and was a wonderfully comforting scent to end the day with.

Welcome to our little corner of the fediverse!

[-] wtharris89@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

Thanks for making me aware of it, glad to be here. ❤️

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

Le Grand Chypre bad ben on my to-try list for easy to long. The notes sounds super interesting

[-] wtharris89@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

I got a sample last week and have shaved with it a couple times, it’s quite lovely!

  • Brush: AP Shave Co Summer 28mm G5C

  • Razor: Dovo Bismarck 6/8" Full Hollow Round Point

  • Lather: Wholly Kaw - Cedrati - Soap

  • Toner: Thayers - Lavender - Toner

  • Aftershave: Noble Otter - Jack - Aftershave

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

Wonderful Sunday shave today. I love the citrus and woody notes of Cedrati and they go well with the higher key citrus notes in Jack. I have always loved the Siero base, which helped make the mechanics of this shave top-tier.

The Bismarck (Iron Chancellor) performed magnificently! It currently has a rather boutique edge (Koma nagura on Black Arkansas), but this razor performs well regardless of what stones are used to finish the edge. The razor has a 0.1337 radian sharpening angle that results in a bevel angle of 15.3 degrees. We're in (and slightly narrower than) Filarmónica bevel angle territory here. Now, I did a little work on the spine of my razor, as I did with @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social's Bismarck, but I doubt that this work changed the razor's sharpening geometry significantly. In my experience, razors that have sharpened bevel angles in the 15-16 degree range provide extraordinary shaves.

We're doing leet sharpening angles now?

No wonder this thing shaves so well 😊

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

I'm far too oblivious to realize that I was doing leetcode :)

  • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving exclusive MOAR BADGER (silver tip)
  • Razor: Wade & Butcher Celebrated Fine India Steel Razor – 13/16" near wedge with barber’s notch
  • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Post Shave: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

This W&B was my first nice straight razor, and it played a key role in my stumble that ended at the bottom of the straight razor rabbit hole. Still a great shave.

The big 30 mm silver tip feels like a fluffy warm lather pillow.

Luxurious. Just how I like my Sunday shaves.

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

I started searching for a W&B like that after seeing yours. I used mine a couple of days ago. Awesome piece of history.

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

There's something soft-feeling about their steel that I really enjoy.

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

My W&B Fine India Steel has a bevel angle of ~17 degrees, is also a great shaver, and has that soft-feeling as well.

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

How are you guys measuring the bevel? Can you just lay it flat, set your phone on top and use one of those measurement apps?

[-] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I measure the sharpening angle, then double it to get the bevel angle. The sharpening angle is defined by the centerline from the spine through the apex and the line from the spine's widest point to the apex;

I just measure the spine width (a) with a caliper, divide that by 2 (a'), then measure the distance between the apex and the widest point on the spine (b) with a machinist's rule (where it would rest on a sharpening stone). then:

bevel angle = 2 * arcsine(a'/b)
or
bevel angle = 2 * arcsine(a/(2b)) [sometimes this is easier if I'm doing the math in my head]

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

That makes sense. Likely more accurate than a phone sensor.

13.10.2024 - Pumpkin Spice is nice

  • Prep: warm water
  • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
  • Razor: RazoRock Hawk V2 w/ Superknurl handle
  • Blade: KAI Protouch MG
  • Lather: Southern Witchcrafts - Samhain
  • Post-Shave: Southern Witchcrafts - Samhain AS; moisturizer

-> 2 pass head shave, 1 pass around the beard. A good shave, but unfortunately some skin reactions.

Today was a Sunday that just called for some Pumpkin Spice and Samhain seemed to be a great fit. I know how to lather SW perfectly, so it's always a good choice for my shave - unfortunately, there seems to be some irritation from the AS now that wasn't present 2 years ago. Granted, could be that something in the toner denatured despite it still smelling good. Unfortunately, that means one of my absolute favourite scents is now out as an aftershave option.

I did a short dermarolling session after my shave because I want to try it out for my skincare essay. I really just want to include treatments that I've tried myself. Despite the redness, it felt pretty okay. Will see if it actually does something for my old acne scars and some of the wrinkles...

Good shave.

Have a good night!

Darn tootin'!!

[-] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 5 points 1 month ago

everything's set for Wednesday's BVWSC shave?

Next Wednesday is already the third one? Damn, October goes by fast... Thx for the reminder!

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

Just to be pedantic -- you'd call it "this wednesday" instead of "next wednesday", even though it is technically the next Wednesday. English do be like that. I found this nice explanation:

Strictly speaking you would say "this coming Wednesday" for future events, and "this past Wednesday" for events in the past - but in most situations "future" and "past" tend to be omitted, as the timeline is implied by the context.
I went to the gym this Wednesday.
I will go to the gym this Wedneday.
[-] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

Actually, this is super helpful - especially the little textbox explanation about coming/past Wednesday. Makes sense to me as we also have "kommenden Mittwoch" und "vergangenen Mittwoch" in german 👍🏻

Every 3rd Wednesday of the month, we have a Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club meeting. It consists in shaving with the same soap.

We prepare by voting on which soap we want to use well ahead of time and the owner of the winning disk soap sends a sample to each of the participants.

You joined just too late to participate in the October meeting unless you have Narcisse already (it's on Wednesday), but you're welcome to join for November!

[-] wtharris89@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

Oh, very cool. I don’t have Narcisse, but I’d love to participate next month. 🙂

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Great! The suggestion and voting threads will probably come soon. Our master of ceremonies @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social runs a tight ship

Edit: I'm forgetful, ugh. The next one has already been decided as well. It's Stirling Oro Valley. @walden@sub.wetshaving.social, is it too late for @wtharris89@sub.wetshaving.social to get in?

[-] wtharris89@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

No need, I have a sample of Oro Valley kicking around. :)

Then keep a portion for November 20th!

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago

Sweet, you're all set :)

It's the Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club shave - on the 3rd Wedesday of the mrnth, we shave with a soap we voted for together.

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 4 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the reminder!

[-] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

Yes! Thanks for the reminder!

[-] enndeegee@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago

Woop.

I'm ready and raring and will probably mess it up. But you know me. I'll get there
