I was going to ask when has it ever made sense to run Windows, but then I noticed how old those logos are. Carry on!:-)

[-] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 20 points 1 month ago

What are the current logos then? Did Linux's change?

[-] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 57 points 1 month ago

Windows: Just four blue squares

Apple: Same shape, no colour whatsoever

Linux: 🏳️‍⚧️

[-] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 55 points 1 month ago

I always think it's so funny that the old stereotypical gray haired man or neckbeard linux user got replaced by the new stereotypical transfem linux user. Now that there's less need to compile our own software there's more time to compile our own genders

[-] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 27 points 1 month ago

My (entirely anecdotal, based on like three human beings who I'm acquainted with) impression is that the Trans-Chick linux user is the neckbeard linux user. She just started HRT in her 30s and lost a lot of weight.

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 month ago

talk about an unexpected overlap

If the stereotype is to be believed, why is this, do you think? Why would Linux and open source software attract such a disproportionately high number of transfrem individuals?

And would it be causative or is it or non-causative?

[-] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 19 points 1 month ago

As long as we're being arm-chair-y -- At the core of being into FOSS is the following thought: "Don't tell me what I can and can't do" -- Getting into Linux means going out and exploring, deliberately learning something, and all because you don't want your computer to decide things for you.

.... Transgender individuals are similarly breaking out of the "conventional" and making themselves "outsiders".

It's not causation, but correlation. Anyone who's into FOSS will most definitely not be one for conforming to social standards, and transpeople are not people who are conforming to social standards.

[-] JustAnotherKay@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

As the meme points out, Linux attracts the autistic crowd, and there have been some studies done that have found a correlation between autism and being transgender. Namely that people who are autistic tend to care less about gendered norms, and therefore are more likely to explore their own gender

[-] nzeayn@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

yes, and. lets not forget this discussion is happening on lemmy. this place is just autistic as fuck. even those of us autist around here who are straight tend to be the ones who find most other straight people obnoxious. we've self sorted into an audiance that, as another comment hilariously points out. most of us probably know a genx neckbeard linux user who used to be really gumpy. but she's pretty chill and happy now.

[-] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I think it's just that computers and programming are a really good escape from the world around you and that attracts anyone who feels in some way trapped or unseen in real life, especially with open source software where you really are free to make your computer into your own customized personal little world where you feel safe.

[-] exu@feditown.com 8 points 1 month ago

Oh, there are still enough neckbeards in Linux. Especially in the YouTuber sphere.
The transfem is an additional route, officially merged when Linus Torvalds confirmed he was woke on Mastodon.

I do miss Windows 95 sometimes...

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 13 points 1 month ago

I mean, compared to Win 3.1, and before that, DOS...

The default background is black. The colors are all muted. The cursor is slow. The computer shuts down for 12 hours a day. The sounds sound compressed and muffled. When you try to open a program/app, it prompts, "For what? What's the point?"

Akshually it's called Autism Spectrum Disorder

[-] lennivelkant@discuss.tchncs.de 31 points 1 month ago

I can't speak for all of us, but I prefer "Autism" as a blanket term (that we hopefully all understand covers a wide spectrum anyway) over "Disorder". Yes, I get that we deviate from the neurodevelopmental norm, but "Disorder" feels condescending to what I perceive as simply a different way of working.

I also understand that some with higher support needs may differ from that perception. My opinion is not universal.

On the other hand, I'm perfectly fine with calling my ADHD a Disorder. Shit's chaotic as fuck.

[-] Deconceptualist@lemm.ee 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I appreciate that. I have a partner who is on the spectrum and has ADHD as well.

I was only joking in the pedantic style often associated (rightly or wrongly) with autistic traits. ASD is the official DSM-5 term. Of course being a diagnostic manual, that focuses only on behavioral deficits. As I understand, the DSM gets plenty of criticism because like you mention, it omits all the interesting ways folks cope or even creatively use abilities like hyperfocus for positive outcomes. But on the other hand, I'm not sure successful behavior requires any psychological treatment, so that may be unnecessary to include in the first place.

Anyway, I think this is one of many situations where simple terminology doesn't capture the full nuance of reality. So apologies if that came across as crude.

[-] lennivelkant@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I didn't take your comment as rude, personally. To me, opening with Akshually indicated that joking intent to parody pedantry and I took no offense. I just felt like expressing my opinion on the term with no particular judgement of your joke because I think that the words we use are worth talking about.

I know I have a habit of replying seriously to jokes, which often comes across as me taking issue with them. I keep forgetting to clarify the tone of my message. If only there was a medical term for that communication deficit 😉

BeOS, Haiku OS, Temple OS, NeXTSTEP, OS/2, DOS, AmigaOS(ok, that's just a single furry right now).

[-] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 5 points 1 month ago

There's a furry using AmigaOS?

.......... What for?

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

https://www.sabrina-online.com/

It's a pretty safe for work comic. I haven't found a citation, but supposedly it started in a Amiga magazine before moving online. It also stopped in 2016, so no one is using Amiga now I guess.

[-] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago

I keep wanting to buy a 500 or something a bit newer for nostalgia, but that's hard (a) from Japan where they never really got off the ground and (b) as time goes on they get fewer and more expensive. Not a furry, however.

I'm also depressed though.

[-] naught101@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

20 year Linux user here. Definitely more depressed than autistic (but not claiming to be 100% NT).

Also I just got given a macbook for a new job. Feels weird.
