Wow, imagine having to pay for dark mode.

[-] jetsetdorito@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

They also stuck this dumb "My AI" bot at the top of everyone's chat list. You have to pay to remove it.

Thank god none of my friends or relatives ever were really Snapchat users. But I'm held hostage by WhatsApp in here.

I envy you, I pulled some family members from Facebook messenger to signal when I closed my account, and while I don't trust Meta keeping WhatsApp private, its still better than Snapchat, Messenger etc.

[-] AlmostDachshund@rammy.site 1 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah, that's for sure. Messenger and Snapchat are more in the dark side.

I just try to avoid tiktok. I'd use it if it wasn't basically Spyware, but its literally got backdoor access for an authoritarian country that keeps saber rattling. Id rather use snapchat and I definitely don't want to use that either. Its shame.

Can we decentralize social media too?

[-] matt@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Social media is being decentralised the same way Lemmy is. Platforms such as Friendica, Pixelfed, Mastodon, etc are all platforms for decentralised social media.

WhatsApp is fine IMO. It's really just an instant messanger that does about as much as any other. In terms of privacy, WhatsApp is far from bad compared with other apps. The fact that Meta own WhatsApp doesn't really impact that too much.

Thankfully Snapchat has become uncool in my generation again

Snapchat mod by fouad who makes GB and FMWhatsapp works flawlessly without having to sub for a snap+

Hopefully a viable alternative will finally pop-up soon.

[-] Srootus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Signal is extremely viable got chats, voice/video calls and stories, almost 1:1 with Snapchat, only problem is no one wants to move, because theyre too comfortable with what they use, there'd need to be a mass walkaway like Reddit just had to get most people to budge.

[-] SeeJayEmm@lemmy.one 0 points 1 year ago

I mean yes but, you don't have to use it.

[-] Srootus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

My close friend groups almost exclusively uses it for communication, as much as I'd love to ditch the app, I'd then miss out on vital communication, I've tried to onboard them to Signal or Session but they won't budge, so I have to make do.

[-] SeeJayEmm@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

I feel that. I have maybe 3 friends who use Signal. The rest are spread out sms, fb, discord, etc...

[-] SirEDCaLot@lemmy.fmhy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Try Matrix. It's a hair more complex than Signal but it has a lot more features- closer to Discord than Signal.
Beeper.com is based on it- when they finally open the registration floodgates that will probably be the one to use. It's just Matrix (fully federated) with hosted bridges to a few popular chat networks. And that integration is enough of a 'carrot' to persuade a lot of people to move.

[-] Srootus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

Tried a matrix instance, again no one interested to move from Discord, which is another platform I'd happily never use again.

[-] SirEDCaLot@lemmy.fmhy.ml 0 points 1 year ago

well apparently Discord is now pushing the monetize button... perhaps that will help them make the move...

[-] Srootus@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Probably not. The only way monitisation would make them move is if discord forced a subscription. These are people who don't really care about ads or data collection.

Using Snapchat to actually chat sounds so frustrating.
