Bresheeth was released without charge on 2 November, after spending a night in custody, but remains under investigation.

What the fuck does that mean? I didn't know the UK laws were so authoritarian. So what, we arrest you for making a speech, detain you for a night, and then let you go without charge? And no repercussions for the inconvenience?

And how does "remains under investigation" not constitute intimidation?

In authoritarian countries, you can be arrested for protesting against genocide.

[-] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 17 points 15 hours ago

In a video recording of Bresheeth’s arrest, a police officer informs him that he is being arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 for “making a hate speech”.

Excuse me sir you got a loicense for that?

Another case of criticizing Israel == anti-Semitism

This is getting really old.

[-] W4nd3r3r@lemmy.ml 17 points 11 hours ago

You mean criticizing Israel = Terrorism

He was arrested over "Terrorism"

[-] Sundial@lemm.ee 64 points 21 hours ago

Funny part is that he is Jewish and grew up in Israel.

[-] fluxion@lemmy.world 78 points 21 hours ago

Whose parents survived the Holocaust.

"Never forget."

At least there's some people who properly understood that lesson from our dark history.

[-] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 18 points 21 hours ago

I know you don't actually find it funny, but the censorship is very worrying.

[-] ogmios@sh.itjust.works 12 points 21 hours ago

"Funny" has a much broader connotation than what you're suggesting. In this case it's funny because the truth doesn't align with what is expressed by his critics.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago

It's not funny. It's dangerous. Dangerous for Jews like him and for Jews like me.

[-] Sundial@lemm.ee 21 points 20 hours ago

Funny as in it's a commentary on how so many people equate criticism of Israel to anti-Semitism, like how the person I replied to pointed out. I know it's dangerous, I know Jews around the world are suffering the repercussions of Israel's actions and a lot them are speaking up against it.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 19 points 20 hours ago

I just hate it. Israel has made my life more dangerous than any modern Hitler-lover.

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 25 points 20 hours ago

Getting really old and also going to backfire spectacularly. Israel has pretty much completely lost support of younger Americans (can't speak for UK). Once those younger generations age into politically power, we're going to see a major shift.

[-] NeuronautML@lemmy.ml 1 points 34 seconds ago

In Europe i haven't met anyone in my circle of friends and extended circle who doesn't completely hate Israel and zionism. I don't push my views on anyone, especially the younger teen family members, but i was pleasantly surprised to see them saying they were going to an anti israeli protest.

The only people who currently have any support for Israel are boomers and even them are going from "supporting Israel right to exist" to "both sides" stage right now.

[-] filister@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Nah, there is simply too much money involved. And sadly money influences absolutely everything from politics, moral decisions, war warfare, etc.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 19 points 21 hours ago

Netanyahu has done a lot to help the world see this propaganda game for what it is. Not worth genocide, but it's a slight silver lining. The "criticism is antisemitism" strategy won't work forever for Israel.

Also, I bet you're a programmer.

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 20 points 17 hours ago

And when I talk about Israel being a direct threat to Americans citizens, this is part of what I'm talking about.

Yes, I know this happened in the UK and not the US, but the principle still applies.

[-] Mrkawfee@lemmy.world 36 points 20 hours ago

Speech crime. No coincidence that George Orwell was a Brit.

[-] WanderingVentra@lemm.ee 9 points 10 hours ago

Nor Alan Moore, the writer of V for Vendetta, another story about a totalitarian, ever watchful, fascist state.

Remember, remember, the 5th of November

The wonderful western democracies at work. The UK is following Germany's steps into madness.

Looks like the Cs are being Bs again..

They seem to go out of their way to do that.
