Hey everyone ! About a year or so ago I've left Reddit and found my home here in Lemmy at ML, mainly because it was at the top of the instance list i saw at that time. So far it's been great, but I'm running into some issues. A lot of communities and instances are not federated with ML anymore and I'm interested in the content of those communities. I've kind of ignored it the first few times i couldn't find a community of my interests and later finding out it was because they were blocking ML (or perhaps vice-versa), but it has happened enough times that i wish to move on and find a new instance.

That being said and i hope I'm in the right community to ask this, i would like to request some suggestions for a new instance that is light on the power tripping mod rules and light on creating drama that gets the instance defederated around lemmy, from the personal experience of the fine folks around here. The mod thing didn't affect me much, i try to follow the rules and be respectful, but every other month i interact with users that hate ML mods so much that they tell me the moment they see my instance. Hopefully in the future I'd ideally get to interact with ML from an instance that's not defederated across Lemmy, where i can access more communities than from ML or Lemmygrad.

I'm hoping to not ruffle any feathers here, all i want is to participate in lemmy communities and i have nothing against anyone on ML. Like I said, other than being blocked from participating in other instances, it's been a pretty fair experience around here.

Colorectal cancer is a disease and i see 3 plates of red meat. Not great for you to eat red meat every single day. It's a pretty well known and demonstrated fact that eating red meat every day increases your risk of colorectal cancer significantly. Have you seen colorectal cancer ? It's a terrible, terrible illness.

Just to add a note that this graph comes from a study made on rats. I love the study and i use this graph frequently when discussing drugs, but i think it's important to know.

Being done on rats also raises the point that it's done excluding a mental component of using the drug, like for instance how some people use cigarettes in depression for its antidepressant effect or use alcohol to cope with mental health issues.

It also doesn't explore the mental health effects of repeated exposure to large doses of hallucinogens on people, which we still don't have research on because of how demonized hallucinogens are in most countries doing research on drugs.

Fyi the syncthing-fork guy (catfriend1) who's still updating has a donating button on F-droid via Liberapay. It's up to you if your financial situation allows you to donate, but the more of us help the remaining developers for their time, in particular those of us that rely so much on their work, the better off we'll be. Let's give them a little motivation to keep working on this.

FYI2 syncthing-fork (as written and confirmed in this thread) has an import button for your folders from syncthing Android.

US, Germany, France, Australia and now Canada. With every new country i hear suppressing legitimate Israeli criticism it makes me want to criticize Israel even further.

I am extremely apalled at the actions of Israel and at the identity of Israel itself.

This is why stand your ground laws can't realistically exist in places that aren't sparsely populated. Because someone will read "defend your property and life with force if necessary" as "act as a raging lunatic and attempt to shoot anyone who comes at the door because it's legal to do so if you claim you were defending your property, even though there was no indication of actual imminent danger to property or people".

In my country we don't have stand your ground laws. You can only defend yourself in case of an attack, but not drive away a thief. You're supposed to run and call the police, but I keep wondering if a legal framework like the US where you weren't legally punished for attacking a thief in your house wouldn't be fairer but then there's news like this.

They say Hamas are terrorists because they attack innocent civilians and that may be true, but it seems that by the same metric, aren't the IDF also terrorists for attacking innocent civilians in clearly marked vehicles ?

Verily i say more, If we go by how much civilian infrastructure and casualties have been committed, one side is clearly acting more strongly within the definition of terrorist than the other.

Trump would only win if the Democrat party found someone seemingly more inept than him.

I am impressed that the Democrat party managed to present not one, but two outstandingly incompetent candidates. In a row. That's some bottom of the barrel advanced scraping techniques right there. They even managed to get a representation of both sexes.

I'm sure Mr. Biden will be terribly distraught, as soon as he is able to understand what's happening around him at the moment.

I'm no anthropologist or anything, but I'm pretty sure the annexation of the West Bank would guarantee a permanent guerilla terrorist force operating within Israel's borders for the foreseeable future. Israel would never know peace. In 200 years they'll probably still trying to snuff out terrorist cells constantly killing civilians.

Just with this war they have created thousands of fresh new volunteers for Hamas both within and outside the general area of the conflict.

The way out of this is more empathy for the Palestinians, not less.

"Guys please, can you just ignore the dead children for one minute? They're already dead, it's not like they care anyway.

We're trying to make money here and your empathy for your fellow human beings is just mucking it all up. Please, please try to follow the apolitical rules we laid out and for the duration of the show and just stfu and give us money ok ? That's all we want. Bring the money and leave your messy politics at home. Your complaining makes other people not want to give us more money.

Remember why we're doing this. For culture and money. But mostly money. Thanks!"

Speed. High speed trains clock in at 300 km/h, whereas maglev takes you to 600 km/h.

I agree with the above commenter, the EU needs to streamline passenger rights and international connections first, like they did for airtravel, but once that is taken care of, the next step is connecting European capitals on high speed maglev with very few stops.

To give you a sense of what such a transportation system could achieve, you could go from Lisbon to Kiev in 6 hours and a half at 600 km/h. If capitals served as country maglev hubs, we could do away with intra European flights altogether and cut a significant amount of flights to outside of Europe by concentrating the departures.

You could then have a hierarchy of sorts where maglev serves traveling between capitals, high speed between major cities within countries, regional between regions of smaller sparsely populated towns and local trains within cities or between close cities. Ideally if a passenger wanted to travel from a small town into another small town 3000 km away, the service should book all the appropriate hierarchy changes in one ticket.

The issue is that the line would have to be pretty much straight or have very shallow curves, due to the speed, so it would take a TON of land buying. That's complicated enough as it is without even considering the NIMBYs.

What's the first indicator a scientist tried to build their own experiment using the soldering station ?

The smell of burnt fingers.

What's the scientist waiting for sitting in front of their own experiment ?

Waiting for the infinite loop they coded to finish after they claimed they didn't need the engineer's help to write the code in their experiment.

How many scientists do you need to change a light bulb ?

Theoretically just one, but it can take several until one of them can call an engineer and admit they only know how to change light bulbs theoretically.

What does a scientist call an electrolytic capacitor ?

Acid distribution subsystem.

A 9/11, a Pearl Harbor, a Holocaust even. Some people are already classifying it as a mass extinction event. Read here why those festival goers are aptly compared to the dinosaurs.
