Inflation is being driven by the rapid rise in wages as the Kremlin pours billions into military industries and sends millions of men to fight in Ukraine. In the middle of a war, companies outside the defense sector can’t compete for workers without paying much higher wages. In turn, they charge higher prices. So the spiral continues.

“Prices are rising because of the war,” Alexandra Prokopenko at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin told CNN. “Demand in the economy is distorted in favor of unproductive spending. Wages rise because employers have to compete for labor.

As a Brit, it's really funny seeing this "russia is toast ANY second now, guys" propaganda when we've had lurpak locked up in plastic alarmed boxes since 2020.

Of course the Russian economy is gonna struggle, but even an imploding post-soviet neoliberal hellscape is gonna roll an identical post-soviet neoliberal hellscape but with half a dozen f-16s and a fraction of the population.

Wait really? Lmao what the fuck

depends on the store.

Though it was cheese I saw that was locked up in actual fkn boxes. Similar articles mention other measures like only stocking 3 or 4 expensive items at a time so a smash n grab isn't as lucrative.

Also, shops about the size of a bodega or gas station store often have private security during evenings, but that has been a thing for years now??? idk I only noticed it since I moved to England from Wales in 2017. Theyve been a thing at larger stores for longer but now even smaller (usually chain) stores enlist them.

Cheese is extremely good to steal. Really easy shape to pocket and feeds you for a week's worth of sandwiches.

Cheese, ham and butter are probably the most stolen food items. Then the bread is paid for.

I've swiped a few things through self checkouts - usually extra pricey vegan meat lmao. It's just so funny how these same stores usually have a food bank collection at the front that's entirely customer-funded when fuckloads of perishable meats, dairy, etc. are just thrown out or sold at a massive discount via those discount food waste apps.

I always think about this when I see those food donation boxes, what a joke

sounds like a problem that could be fixed with, i dunno, reverting to a previous expression of government.

Russia, revive socialism. Then release your queer and lgbt issues, make the new scapegoat an actual enemy, instead of making up enemies within

wtyp time to reduce profit share

And when the war ends, Russia will have to adapt to a post-war economy, curbing state spending, reintegrating huge numbers of demobilized soldiers and reorientating companies away from feeding military industries.

or they could not do that, implement a jobs program so that all the demobilized soldiers can get a job in the public sector instead of being unemployed.

I mean it is clear that even the CNN knows there won't be a Zimbabwe style scenario in Russia in part thanks to the economic policies of the Soviet era.

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 32 points 5 days ago

No see Putler and Ruzzzia are all totally dumb irrational actors and they can't possibly think of a complicated solution such as "put all those soldiers to work on public things". They'll surely just let all those soldiers go instantly unemployed and let them be disgruntled and that will lead to a western friendly revolution! Putin cooked himself here and can't possibly think of ways to prevent it!

[-] Des@hexbear.net 32 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

cool and good scenario: Putin does big government FDR style programs post-war to keep vets productive, people begin to trust the state's capacity again, Putin dies naturally, United Russia breaks up into it's constituent parties without a solid successor, Russian Communist Party gains a slim majority and leverages this state power, we get a reborn but significantly more lib Soviet Russia closely aligned to China

Sino-Soviet split finally vindicated

[-] supafuzz@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago

just let all those soldiers go instantly unemployed

this is exactly what all western governments would do though

[-] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago

They can, because Putin is a LIB

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 27 points 5 days ago

Just keep them in the army and assign them to build shit?

Russia will forever suffer for not being socialist until it makes the sane decision to return to the most superior form of civilization they tried to kill 30 years prior

[-] Yukiko@hexbear.net 30 points 5 days ago

Only 25% more expensive? Hot damn I wish I was that lucky.
