It's not their "own savagery" the Taliban aren't originally from Afghanistan. They were originally from Saudi Arabia and were part of the US effort to subvert the Soviet invasion.

The Taliban came after the Soviets were kicked out of Afghanistan, and were not part of the original Mujahedeen. They, in fact, were instrumental in overthrowing the fractured Mujahedeen-led government in the 90s.
