Just beneath the streets of modern-day Los Angeles lies a world of demons ... and angels. Globetrotting misfit and renegade occultist John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), a man who has literally been to hell and back, enters this world to help a skeptical policewoman investigate the mysterious suicide of her twin sister in Constantine. Based on the long-running, adult DC Comics/Vertigo comic book series "John Constantine: Hellblazer."

I will update this post when more details are revealed.

This movie is an overlooked gem.

It has no business being as well executed as it is, considering the budget and niche topic.

It's also seemingly free of the meddling and over explaining that plagued comic book movies of it's era. As a casual fan of the comic character, and one tired of seeing Bruce Wayne's parents die on film again, I didn't feel talked-down-to or that Keanu's portrayal took any glaring liberties.

If anything, the film leans into "this guy doesn't talk about his past" an appropriate amount, to maintain the vibe.

And you get Peter Stormare as the best Lucifer ever depicted on screen.

Supposedly, the producers wanted Lucifer to show up in a spiked collar and BDSM leather gear. Peter was the one that said no, he should be wearing all white. He still thinks himself an angel, no matter how much he’s fallen.

Plus Tilda Swinton as an excellent Gabriel.

Certainly the best depiction of Gabriel on screen that I've seen, appropriately holier than thou, self righteous... beautiful and terrifying.

Also, very much a fan of casting a beautiful woman, in a suit and tie, without eccentuated breasts or traditionally feminine makeup (or hairstyle, for the time) to represent an angel... its actually pretty accurate to depict an angel as androgynous, even though it pissed off a lot of fundies at the time.

Oh yes, his performance is reason enough for a rewatch. 🤌🏻

How does Keanu Reeves look older here?

[-] TheImpressiveX@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

It's the beard. I guess without it, he looks older.

The Constantine TV show is also less than $20 on Blu Ray, worth watching. Matt Ryan was perfect for the role!

558 minutes, 13 episodes.
