I merged the headline and the first paragraph.

Honda and Nissan have formally agreed to hold talks over the next six months on a possible merger, a deal that would create the world’s third-largest automaker and give them more resources to compete with a growing threat from Chinese carmakers.

Why compete at all? I think the top Chinese state owned car company could do a bang up job if they owned Nissan and Honda

[-] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 36 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Nissan really hasn't been the same after their CEO had to escape in the trunk of a car.

[-] krolden@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

Hahah I forgot about that

[-] Parzivus@hexbear.net 34 points 1 year ago

Forget China, they can't make a better car than Toyota right now

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

I'm waiting for the day they do.

[-] coolusername@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

How familiar are you with Chinese cars

my first question. I bet they combine them as two full names. like Honda-Nissan instead of a new mixto name.

like DaimlerChrysler or Weyland Yutani.

[-] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

In the West they'd come up with some terrible meaningless name like Stellantis, but Japan has names like Bandai Namco, Sega Sammy Holdings and Square Enix, so Honda Nissan might be a possibility.

Hondasan for Japanese dad vibes

[-] godlessworm@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

oh yeah? what if the nissan was made by jesus christ? should i still "rIdE a BiCyClE"???

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

Yes, and you should convert it into a technical so that you can attack and dethrone god.

[-] ColonelKataffy@hexbear.net 24 points 1 year ago

why would honda tie themselves to a failing car company?

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago

Retool and make only Hondas at those Nissan factories? Idk

[-] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago

But in that case why frame this as a merger instead of a strip down?

[-] GrosMichel@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

Save face and not freak out investors.

[-] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

Mergers are rarely if ever a blending of two equals. Big fish eats little fish. On the rare occasion that a merger tries to preserve the hierarchy, culture, etc of each of the firms it usually ends disastrously.

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

Idk, I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of the industry

[-] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

I don't feel threatened by China. It's easy.

I remember when capitalists called it competition.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago

The only positive that could come out of this is some new sportscars. New Nissan GTR and Honda S2000 when?

Hopefully this means good Nissan but good

[-] BlueMagaChud@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago

how's that Plaza Accord working out for you?

[-] jackmarxist@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago

Is this going to be like Boeing? Because Honda is pretty fucking good to be merging with Nissan.

[-] BobDole@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago

I’ve rented a couple Nissans over the past few years and they sucked shit.

I think it's doubtful they'll be successful with this fusion dance, they haven't even gone supersaiyan.

I could see honda frontiers selling well in the united states of trucks

[-] ryepunk@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Nope, the American will never accept a foreign made truck. The Toyota had some impeccable indestructible trucks and Ford and Chevy outsold them. At this point you need to sell a truck the size of a school bus to satisfy the average American truck buyer.

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

as one of thousands of assholes that has such an undying affection for older, light duty trucks that I own one... yes we would. america defacto banned light duty pickups in the 70s with the chicken tax, which is why that market segment vanished by the 90s. I have one of the last ones and it is about 12 months from qualifying for "antique" status.

everybody as his brother asks me about it and if I'm interested in selling.

the US can't compete with foreign made when it comes to smaller, efficient anything so the regulators stepped in to do protectionism 50 years ago. that's why the only trucks you can find anymore of 4 door, tiny bed monstrosities and a shitload of actual tradesmen are rocking old pickups or fuckin awd subaru hatchbacks.

[-] culpritus@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago

Red states are starting to make K trucks street legal as a way to have more work truck options available to folks, just completely ridiculous federal policy in this area.

[-] BoxedFenders@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago

Not quite true as the Tacoma and Tundra are always among the top 20 best selling cars in America. They aren't perceived as foreign trucks because they are actually as American as they come- they're built in San Antonio and designed for the US market. I often see them used as chudmobiles- full Trump regalia decked out in US flags, Punisher logos, blue line and NRA stickers galore. But yeah, the big 3 domestic trucks do outsell them overall.

[-] john_brown@hexbear.net 13 points 1 year ago

Toyota doesn't have trucks sitting on lots. People love those fucking things in America.

I live in a place where way too many people drive pickups, and I've been seeing a lot more new Toyota trucks in the last few years.

I think it's because they're almost as big as an F-150 now and they sell them with factory lift kits and all the luxury crap that makes them look like any other dumbass Chevy Childsmusher 1500.

[-] BobDole@hexbear.net 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I see Toyota trucks all the time. They’re usually scratched up with toolboxes and shit in the bed. The American trucks are the pristine “pavement princesses” covered in chud stickers.

(I drive an old used Toyota sedan for reference; this isn’t me trying to blow myself)

[-] gueybana@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

Tbf the f150, the most ameriburger vehicle of all, has 22 mpg.

We already have the Frontier, it doesn't really sell amazingly but it sells.

I wish we'd get the international market frontier. But instead we're stuck with the same 20 year old car, but with a face lift in like 2020.

[-] john_brown@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, that's why I think a Honda Frontier with a Honda drivetrain would sell well. Plenty of people want a basic simple small truck but might balk at Nissans due to reputation, earned or otherwise. The Ridgeline isn't quite truck enough so slotting in a body on frame, solid rear axle option to the line-up seems like a home run.
