I usually just stock up on the stuff you need to stay alive in the first part. The expeditions give you everything else you need. If you didn't know, you can claim all your other rewards from the nexus and get yourself a nice ship and the Atlas staff almost from the get go, and that really helps

I think you'll save yourself a bit of time if you can carry over the various hyperdrives (e.g. Cadmium, Emeril, etc.).
