Image is of Jeff Daniels in The Newsroom, giving a speech (parodied below) about how - gasp - America sucks. But in a patriotic way.

And you - general megathread poster - yeah - just in case you accidentally wander into the news megathread one day, there are some things you should know, and one of them is that there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest megathread in the world.

We're seventh in citations, twenty-seventh in accurate predictions, twenty-second in effortposts, forty-ninth in non-mainstream article posting, 178th in guessing when wars will start, third in powerusers, number four in dialectics, and number four in megathread exports. We lead Hexbear in only three categories: pointless infighting, number of adults who believe Putin is based, and copium manufacturing, where we produce more than the next twenty-six lemmy megathreads combined, twenty-five of whom are full of delusional liberals. None of this is the fault of any Hexbear user, but you, nonetheless, are without a doubt, a member of the WORST-period-GENERATION-period-EVER-period, so when you ask what makes us the greatest megathread in the world, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about! Jokes about whether they got a Zionist's semen in time?!

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.

Mozambique’s Opposition Suspends Protests Amid Human Rights Concerns - Telesur English

Article

Mozambique’s opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane, announced on Sunday that demonstrations against the outcome of the October 8 presidential election would be suspended for a week. This decision aims to allow humanitarian organizations and international bodies to assess the state of human rights in the country. In a Facebook broadcast, Mondlane declared a five-day reprieve to facilitate the entry of regional actors into Mozambique, as reported by the Club of Mozambique.

Mondlane mentioned that a group of former heads of state from southern Africa has expressed interest in mediating an end to the ongoing political impasse. The situation has drawn attention from neighboring countries, with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa dispatching his national security advisor to Maputo amid escalating unrest.

South Africa shares a border with Mozambique and has significant investments in various sectors, including mining, energy, and construction. In November, South African authorities temporarily closed the Lubombo border crossing after protestors set vehicles ablaze on the Mozambican side.

Mondlane, who claims that the election was rigged, has vowed to install himself as President despite being outside the country. Last week, Mozambique’s top court upheld the victory of Daniel Chapo from the ruling Frelimo party, albeit with a reduced margin. Since protests against the election results began in October, more than 250 people have reportedly been killed in clashes, with local civil society groups indicating that most victims were shot by security forces.

This situation underscores the urgent need for dialogue and resolution to ensure peace and stability in Mozambique while addressing pressing human rights concerns.

Started watching the show Silo on AppleTV a couple weeks ago, maybe 3/4ths of the way through season one now. On the whole a really well-made show, maybe a few pacing issues or the occasionally poorly constructed/lit/shot set that keeps it from being at the same level as the best prestige TV of the last 25 years. But for a sci-fi production that must require a fair bit of CGI or The Volume or just expensive sets it's one of the best I've seen. But then there's Common, who plays the main antagonist in the episodes I've watched, and who's operating at a level far below the rest of his castmates. Every scene he's in just drags down the quality of the show around him.

It's like Common was cast in the CW or old SfyFy channel schlock version of this production that would've existed twenty years ago, but everyone else is in Apple's post-GOT post-Westworld "we have to compete with The Boys and Rings of Power and Dune and The Last of Us" show.

Update on yesterday's Su-57 simulated Kh-69 launch maneuveres: Last night, Kyiv came under a combined missile attack, involving Kh-69 low observable subsonic terrain following cruise missiles, Iskander-M ballistic missiles, and Kh-22/32 high altitude supersonic cruise missiles, according to air raid monitoring channels. The air raid monitoring channels were unable to report on the movement of the Su-57s during their combat mission, and initially confused the Kh-69 launches for Kh-59s. The Kh-69s disappeared and reappeared on radar according to them. Civilians in Kyiv took shelter in the Metro.

In response, Ukraine is said to have mobilised Su-24 aircraft for Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG cruise missile launches. It is unknown if these were simulated or actual launches at this time.

Gulf Delegation Visits Syria - Telesur English

Article

Syria’s interim Foreign Minister praised Arab nations for supporting the Syrian people. A delegation from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) arrived in Damascus on Monday for high-level talks with the Syrian interim administration.

The delegation is led by Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya and GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Saudi-owned Alarabiya TV reported. Speaking at a press conference in Damascus with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani, Al-Yahya said that his visit is part of the GCC’s efforts to strengthen ties with Syria.

He underscored the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and supporting its stability, calling for the removal of international sanctions on the country. For his part, Syria’s interim Foreign Minister praised Arab nations for supporting the Syrian people during and after the country’s prolonged conflict.

At the press conference, al-Shibani said that GCC delegation has been briefed on Syria’s plans for the future. He added Damascus is willing to look forward to strengthening relationships with Gulf brothers. “We want to reintegrate Syria into its Arab environment,” he said.

According to reports, GCC officials also discussed with Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ways to revitalize Syria’s war-battered economy as well as Syria’s security as an integral part of the region’s stability.

GCC Secretary-General said the council’s respect for Syria’s sovereignty and unity remains paramount. Albudaiwi denounced any foreign interference in Syrian affairs, demanding Israel’s immediate withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights and condemning its settlement expansion in the area.

The delegation, which includes Al-Yahya and Al-Budaiwi, arrived in the Syrian capital on Monday to meet with the new Syrian administration leader, Ahmad Al-Sharaa. This follows the ouster of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government earlier this month.

Venezuela Shows Proof of Life of Argentine Police Officer Nahuel Gallo - Telesur English

Article

FM Yvan Gil responded firmly to the false claims of the right-wing Argentine government. On Thursday, Bolivarian authorities released images confirming the good health of Argentine police officer Nahuel Gallo. This was Venezuela’s response to unfounded accusations from Argentina alleging that the officer was a victim of forced disappearance.

Previously, the administration of President Javier Milei filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding Gallo’s detention. Aimed at tarnishing the Bolivarian nation’s reputation, this maneuver was met with a forceful response from Venezuela’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yvan Gil.

“Milei’s Argentine government continues to put on a shameful spectacle, moving from one absurdity to another on the international stage. Invoking the Rome Statute, which they clearly do not understand, to fuel their unhealthy political obsession is not only ignorant but also scandalously unserious,” he said.

“Officials from Milei’s puppet government, involved in an extreme right-wing coup and terrorist agenda against Venezuela, are using erratic diplomatic actions to justify their own failures and complicity. Justice and human rights are not tools for desperate agendas. Their fiasco only reinforces their status as the laughingstock of global diplomacy,” Gil emphasized.

On December 8, Venezuelan authorities identified activities involving Argentine officer Gallo, who was detained in the state of Tachira on the Colombia-Venezuela border. Under the pretense of visiting family members, he attempted to enter Venezuelan territory to engage in illicit activities.

Gallo is an intelligence agent who was planning an “extraction operation” involving six members of the far-right organization Vente Venezuela, currently sheltered inside the Argentine embassy in Caracas.

Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab also dismissed Argentine claims that Gallo was being held in deplorable conditions at a military base. Specifically, Saab confirmed that the officer is under judicial custody and fully enjoys his fundamental rights in accordance with Venezuela’s constitution.
