Bribe. The word the editor was looking for here is “bribe“.

No that's that awful disgusting thing that happens in those "shithole" countries. Not in our darling west!

18 U.S.C. § 201

Basically, any tech bro that doesn't present the whiney baby with a million dollar voluntary donation is likely to be punished by the regime.

From the tech bros perspective giving such a token amount is a no-brainer regardless of personal beliefs... and it's an extremely worrying precedent to set.

I think you give them too much credit.

From my time living in the US, I got the impression that local oligarchs' personal beliefs are largely aligned with Trump (enabling corruption, oligarch capture of governance, avoiding responsibility for their actions).

However, one relatively unique thing that I noticed about US oligarchs is they tend to be very sensitive about PR and don't like to get their hands dirty (in context of their internal worldview).

They align with Trump in terms of goals, but some may not like his style and presentation.

I would even argue that some US oligarchs may even see Trump's approach as a "low probability, high impact" risk in that he may undermine faith in their rule.

I agree. I think the PR helps with the illusion that they arent oligarchs, but just savvy businessmen. Just lucky americans. One of us. That's how you get poor people praising and defending them. Don't have to worry about uprising or guillotines when you got half the people on your side.

"Kiss the ring, bitch"

Surprised he still wants to be known as Donald, and not "The Don".

[-] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

From any business perspective it’s the smart move.

[-] Eheran@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Just like keeping slaves was too.

Kissing the ring...

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

They're not going to forget you're queer forever just because you're rich, Tim.

[-] NobodyElse@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 year ago

The frothing troglodyte Trump fanatics may care about stuff like that, but the ruling class don’t break ranks over petty stuff like that. Culture war nonsense is to keep the plebs divided and pliable.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Tim might care about that himself when he's put in a conversion camp.

[-] Tgo_up@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

I don't think you understood the comment you're replying to.

He's saying none of the elite gives two shits about gays or lgbtq. They're distraction tactics to divide the lower classes and keep them fighting.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Well then I've said this before- bigots are of every class and if the elites never said one single thing about queer people again, they would still be oppressed, attacked and murdered by poor people who are also bigots.

Bigotry existed long, long, long before capitalism, so one has nothing to do with the other.

[-] NobodyElse@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

In your melodramatic fantasy, the government would be the ones putting people in “conversion camps” and post-Luigi demonstrated very clearly that the ruling elite are not allowed to be seen as subject to the same reality as the rest of us. Tim Cook won’t end up anywhere and if he does, I’ll eat my hat. Screenshot this post.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

In my "melodramatic fantasy," queer people are already being treated like that without Trump being in charge. And you think it will get better?

Apple can always get another CEO.

Eat a Tim Apple.

[-] metaStatic@kbin.earth 13 points 1 year ago

Can we stop dead naming Tim Apple like this?

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Linus Torvalds does not kiss the ring.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I wonder what Trump needs the money for at his inauguration. Maybe the claqueurs and extras he needs to hire to finally show off an inauguration that has more than a quarter of the seats filled...

It’s called hedging your bets.
