how are they paying for the hosting?

[-] Fitik@fedia.io 26 points 3 months ago

Donations and NLNet grant, you can support Pixelfed yourself

[-] TheFederatedPipe@fedia.io 15 points 3 months ago

I just installed and is pretty neat. Truly a photo first social media.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 months ago

Is Pixelfed an appropriate place to upload an image to share on Lemmy / Mastodon?

[-] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 7 points 3 months ago

It’s doable, but you might as well just upload it here. But for smaller albums, it would be a good idea.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 months ago

What's the intended use case for Pixelfed?

[-] Blaze@feddit.org 22 points 3 months ago

Instagram replacement rather than Imgur

For that there is https://catbox.moe/ and https://imgbb.com/

[-] QuazarOmega@lemy.lol 1 points 3 months ago

Pixelfed can be used as image hoster likewise, those 2 you mention are proprietary, so if one cared about that, they might prefer Pixelfed

[-] RmDebArc_5@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 months ago

It acts as a Instagram replacement (but is actually about photos and not videos)

[-] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 2 points 3 months ago

loops.video is aiming for the video segment. Tho' it seems like one app for pix and vids would be nifty.

[-] RmDebArc_5@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

Pixelfed does videos to, and I think federation with loops is planned

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 5 points 3 months ago

Whatever the usecase for Instagram is

[-] MxRemy@piefed.social 4 points 3 months ago

I've been doing that exact thing, but only as long as the images would be Instagram-worthy in the first place. Not just temporary junk. I figure it's probably more optimized for picture storage, since that's the whole point right? Plus then I get it two places instead of one!

If you use the raw media link itself instead of the link to the post, it displays on Lemmy exactly the same as if you'd uploaded it here in the first place. So that's nice.

[-] garretble@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

I have a Pixelfed account and have tried the app.

But I can't actually make posts using it. Don't know where the hiccup is.

once again tried to register. this time, the biggest instance doesn't even load.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago

It might help to pick a smaller instance.

[-] little_beefy@lemm.ee 2 points 3 months ago

pixey.org is a good one to try

[-] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

That's odd. I've had the app for like 3 months.

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 1 points 3 months ago

It's as a reaction to the news about TikTok possibly being sold and people jumping to "Red Book", the other Chinese platform. Maybe some people will read the TechCrunch article and consider Pixelfed.

[-] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

I like pixel fed, but like all federated websites, it doesn't have a lot of content yet.

The beta, not sure how you missed that.

[-] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Damn, you are right. Now that you mention it, I did signup for the beta through their website. I just forgot.

[-] breadcat@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

its been on fdroid since last october, this is just the first official release on gplay and apple

[-] NineMileTower@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

That's probably where I got it then.

Add me! https://pxlmo.com/jakelec

[-] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 months ago

Yeah I tried the beta before. I just got a new smartphone so I'm happy it's available I the app store.

The Impressia for Pixelfed app has been serving me well the past 6 months.

[-] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago

I was wondering about that app as I saw the listing. I'm glad someone likes it.

I’m a little underwhelmed by the iOS app itself, but the content is great

Hopefully Pixelfed continues to bloom into a solid community!

The app doesn’t really feel native, and doesn’t have features like clicking to enlarge an image. If it’s open source I’d look into helping though
