While the majority of the new TikTok refugees still appear to be enjoying their time on Xiaohongshu, some have already had their posts censored. Christine Lu, a Taiwanese-American tech entrepreneur who created a Xiaohongshu account on Wednesday, says she was suspended after uploading three provocative posts about Tiananmen, Tibet, and Taiwan. “I support more [Chinese and American] people engaging directly. But also, knowing China, I knew it wouldn’t last for long,” Lu tells WIRED.

Not bad for a side hustle in the States and not bad for a main hustle if your bilingual and live in a country with a reasonable cost of living

New orders from President Xi:「不,你是在 HEXBEAR。」

Xiaohongshu literally translates from Mandarin to "little red book," likely a reference to the famed little red book of quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong, the founding father of Communist China.

Five minutes of googling would tell you this isn’t the correct way to translate this (would be too based if it was, though); but never miss an opportunity for some good ol’ red baiting. Journalism at it’s finest.

[-] quarrk@hexbear.net 20 points 12 hours ago

A lot of Mandarin speaking people on xhs were agreeing with the notion that it is a nod to Mao’s book. I’m pretty sure it is more of a patriotic nod though, like if America had an app called YankeeDoodle

[-] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 5 points 8 hours ago

I seem to have spoken without having the proper information.

[-] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 10 points 11 hours ago

It’s the colloquial name to Mao’s red book. Everyone knows what it means.

[-] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 4 points 8 hours ago

Ah, well, I stand corrected.

[-] The_Jewish_Cuban@hexbear.net 23 points 14 hours ago

I remember 3 years ago when I first learned about this app having to explain to my Chinese friend why I laughed at it.

It's so far removed from the "little red book" it doesn't even register as a potential pun to Chinese people.

I love how you can just go print lies and have a massive audience.

[-] AlbigensianGhoul@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 7 hours ago

What does the name mean then? I see lots of "it doesn't mean that" but nobody explains what it means.

[-] The_Jewish_Cuban@hexbear.net 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

They have a specific name for the book "select quotations of Mao Zedong". They just don't use the term xiaohongshu. The meaning itself could be translated as "little red book" but the cultural idea behind the phrase of "little red book" doesn't exist in the same way.

This is what I gathered from conversation with them about it. I may have misunderstood them but they're not an apolitical person like many Chinese people and they still didn't understand in such a way. They'd definitely see that connection if it was one that existed I mean.

[-] Parsani@hexbear.net 10 points 12 hours ago

So many news agencies ran with that. Just deeply lazy reporting.

[-] Pili@hexbear.net 45 points 16 hours ago

I'll do it if they give me a work visa (please)

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 33 points 15 hours ago

Hell, i'll work remotely.

[-] AlbigensianGhoul@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 16 hours ago

This new demand could actually be a cool way for them to redirect some English-language staff from TikTok.

[-] carpoftruth@hexbear.net 15 points 15 hours ago

I'm relying on hexbear x users to let us know as new slang evolves. are americans going on x still 白左 or are there new terms?

[-] Parsani@hexbear.net 8 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

The users of xhs aren't really the ones who would use that term

[-] coolusername@lemmy.ml 7 points 14 hours ago
