In case anyone’s wondering, it’s probably because you learn that even really old computers are still really powerful and work fine under Linux especially if you’re gonna use them as a small home server.
Actually real.
Having the right motivations behind design decisions is everything.
I use Linux Mint Cinnamon, which is very full-featured and turn-key. It is not designed to be stripped down and lightweight; it is designed to be a drop-in replacement for windows. And it still feels like greased lightning in comparison. Windows just feels like a bad product now, even if we ignore the spying and the non-free nature of it.
every time I see a fairly priced computer on our second hand market I just wanna buy it I'm not good with money
Anytime someone I know upgrades their laptop, I’m hoping they will offer me the old one 😂
I'm thinking of upgrading from my Asus e200ha at some point. Want it when I do?
You can't just bring in every stray you find on the street
A house full of old computers ought to smell better than one full of cats, anyway. I wonder if the power bill is cheaper than the cat food bill, though.
You just need a bigger house
Well at least she got a thicker matress
This reminds me of a relatively early Real Life Comics, wherein a character is introduced to Linux and, shortly thereafter, is seen to be building Beowulf clusters.
this is the first time I've heard of beowulf clusters and i like it
pc necromancy / zombie hivemind supercomputer
That comic is also how I learned about them! I'm glad to continue the legacy.
Unfortunately, I have yet to find a good way to search Real Life Comics, so I can't find the particular strip. It's a very different comic these days.
No way you can sleep in this room, must be so damn loud and hot in there !
White noise from the slow humming fans, perfect!
And you can wake up when your big job is done and the fans ramp down! living in harmony with the machine
Oh man, you have no idea. I've learnt to wake up when the noise dies, it means something's wrong.
For the era of tech shown, you'd also have tons of clicking and whirring hard drive noise as well. Old Hard Drives are noisy. You can hear all the seeking and read/write operations.
Personally, I find that noise comforting, but the inconsisent nature of it would make it hard to tune out.
you're not wrong, but with enough drives the different seeking noises just blend together so you don't hear the single one, just the wider harmony 😀
no way that bedroom is wired foe that much electrical draw
I think that's what the added power pole seen in the window is for, they just tap straight off that
ah, good observation
I guess you didn't watch the anime. (Serial Experiments Lain)
In the story, some secret agency is running an experiment on her. Her family is fake, she gets custom, powerful hardware slipped to her by strangers, etc. So it is reasonable to assume that in that scenario that bedroom would actually be wired for that much electrical draw.
What’s the source? I am 100% interested in why so many computers were acquired.
Serial Experiments : Lain
It's one of the best animes I've watched. Be warned though it's pretty weird but like in a good way
Fuck all technology based aesthetics except for whatever it was that Lain was serving.
Based on this picture, I'm pretty sure I want to be before linux....
You don’t like living in a satacenter? 🫢
Alright, ive watched this anime twice and i guess im clearly missing something. What's special about it? The animation was okay. They could have thrown in a couple of jokes to spice it up. Maybe toss a pie at the floaty girl once in a while, huh?
What's special about it?
the reason it looks to you like it's just part of the crowd is because it helped define that crowd, in a direction that was distinctly different from 80s cyberpunk and far more rooted in our modern reality - which is impressive considering it's approaching 30 years old now and the internet was in its infancy at the time. it was a pioneer in visual elements and aesthetic vis a vis the web, and it's ingrained in counterculture as its initial popularity spread on 4chan.
i've heard it said that lain is to autism as neon genesis evangelion is to depression, so it may also just be that you're not the target audience.
