Hi everyone!

2025 is here, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Voyager for Lemmy.

  • What features would you like to see added to Voyager in 2025?
  • Are there any bugs or issues that are bothering you?

I have an issue with voyager where if I am on an image centric community, and start scrolling, voyager would sometimes scroll down and zoom through pages of content.

If I scroll down slowly it never happens but it mostly happens if I kinetic scroll.

As for feature, I would love to have the option of customising the theme further. The dark black theme is my favourite, but would love to change some aspects to make more legible. For example, I prefer to have gray font on black background as it's easier on the eyes.

  • It'd be great if user tags and vote totals were included in settings export/import. Losing those would mean dropping Lemmy entirely at this point since I prefer to tag rather than block most problem users. Tag import is also critical if we want to write a script to import user tags from other apps like Sync or Boost (since it'd just be converting one JSON schema to another).
  • It's a longshot since I'm guessing it'd be incredibly heavy on API calls, but a way to import vote totals from Lemmy's up/downvote history. Voyager's vote tracking is the killer feature that had me drop Boost, but it was weird for the first week or so seeing people I knew I upvote all the time at only +1-3. We can manually set vote totals ourselves so someone could write a script to do most of the work outside of the app (especially if #1 is added), but a native way would be far more convenient.
  • An option for long pressing the post thumbnail to show an enlarged preview of said thumbnail. Sync has this, if you needed an example of what I'm thinking of.
  • An option to change what clicking on the OP or community in post view does. It's an incredibly minor annoyance, but sometimes on Android I accidentally tap one of them when attempting to open the post.

No matter how much I try to convince Android not to, it insists on killing Voyager sometimes when I switch to another app. This happens a lot when I'm trying to find a link to post in a reply, but also basically at random any time I switch to another app and back.

Voyager loses all state and just dumps me in my start page again. This is not fun if I'm replying, to say the least.

Contrariwise, Tusky (Mastodon app) drops me in exactly where I left off.

I’d love to see a floating action button like Thunder has with configurable shortcuts. I love this feature for quick navigation, dismiss all read (not fully hide since a refresh can bring those posts back), etc.

One thing that would be great, if possible, would be the option to choose what browser opens links. Right now it’s either in app or the default phone app. I’d love to just send articles to firefox focus to prevent all the ad pop up take overs.

I’m coming back to add another request idea:

Ability to search Saved posts.

I save a lot of useful things on Lemmy but it’s difficult to find again later. You can’t search Saved Posts in this app nor on the website and you can’t set up an RSS feed like on Reddit to get the articles/posts out to somewhere else.

Even if you know the precise title of the post, general search on Lemmy almost never brings it up in the results.

I think Voyager could certainly help compensate for this shortcoming in Lemmy.

I mostly use it on an iPad mini in landscape mode, when lying down and casually reading. Two things:

  1. When scrolling on the main feed, if your left or right finger accidentally touches the screen, instead of scrolling, you're inside the post, which isn't what you intended. So you have to be extra careful keeping your fingers away. Be nice if there was a 1 or 2" zone on each side which only does scroll instead of tap. Not sure I'm explaining it right.

  2. Again, on an iPad mini, the Post box only shows a couple of lines for editing. Most of the screen is taken by application chrome.

Other than that, love the app. Use it daily.

Hey there! Thanks for the suggestions. Are you on the beta build? I deployed a potential fix for #2, curious if it works for you.

[-] fubarx@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 month ago

Am not. Happy to jump on it if you can point me at instructions.

Fast way to open post in normal webkit (in iOS App) view, as fallback if a post has somehow issues.

[-] aeharding@vger.social 0 points 3 months ago

You mean, as linked in post or comments? One thing that might work is long press.

[-] Petter1@lemm.ee 0 points 3 months ago

I would see it in the three dots in the top right of a post, since I see it more in the debug level of feature.

Ah or if you talking within feed, as option in the menu appearing on haptic/long touch would be awesome, yes

Perhaps some work on a sidebar for navigation for tablets or desktop?

I know Apollo never had that, but when I’m on my iPad I tend to use Arctic simply because it uses the real estate better. But I use Voyager on my phone.

[-] aeharding@vger.social 0 points 3 months ago

That's in the plans, nothing is blocking this other than my limited time haha

I would love the ability to add in my own images to a link post as the post's thumbnail✨

When I make Youtube posts I use Invidious and sometimes the native thumbnail will load but most often times not. As such I often have to add in the thumbnail into the text details of the post.

Either way thank you and your contributors for the hard work to make Voyager great!🥳

[-] aeharding@vger.social 0 points 3 months ago

That sounds annoying that the thumbnail won't load. Is there a lemmy bug for it?

The ability to do sidebar editing would be lit!

Keep up with the great work!

First off, you’ve made a great app. Makes me not miss Apollo one bit. Best Lemmy app out there, period.

And I’m on Lemmy because I don’t wanna be on Reddit anymore. Or on X, YouTube, instagram, fashbook - all the exploitative, controlled-media, oligarch-run platforms.

I’d love if Voyager became an ever better tool for that. Give me the option to flag, block or filter out any reference to those platforms. And better yet, automatically propose / replace any posted link to those platforms with a fediverse alternative whenever possible.

Also, I’d love to get automatic context with any given link. I would love to know whether a site is reliable, what country it’s from, who finances it, what political preference it has, if it’s billionaire-owned, etc. All inline with the link itself. There’s online sources for a lot of that info - integrate them into voyager!

This age demands smart tools that make us more informed of what’s going on behind the deluge of info. Voyager could help do that.

Thanks!

I try to use Voyager every few months, but keep going back to Sync because:

  • I want more control over the appearance of my feed, comments, and replies. For the feed, Sync provides:

  • The Back stack on Android seems weird. I don't use a lot of apps with bottom nav bars, but I think they should maintain an entry in the back stack for each category. Voyager seems to keep every instance that I've visited as a separate entry.

A lot of people like Voyager, so you're clearly doing a great job. Keep it up!
