Yeah, I’m calling steaming pile of bullshit on this story. Generated by the totally transparent state of Texas, and delivered on a platter to a Fox “reporter”. Fuck sake, the footage doesn’t show cartel shooting across the river.

And it’s glossing over the alleged simultaneous confrontation between cartel and Mexican military. If that’s the case, a stray round might have gone further north than intended.

This is nothing but propaganda timed to rile up the right and justify these despicable deportations. Bonus for inspiring hate crimes.

I bet you, US blames Mexico, tells them to control their cartel or we go to war.

…More shooting… US goes to war with Mexico.

Same deal with Canada, something triggers war.

USA now controls all of North America, all the way down to and including Panama.

Fuck this place.

It's a bit different than going to the middle east to fight. The cartel can easily find and visit your home and family. They have advanced equipment. They have the money to bribe anybody. They can easily hold someone's family hostage. That would be a bad move.

Afghanistan showed how fucking useless our armed forces are against guerrilla tactics.

[-] WraithGear@lemmy.world 24 points 6 months ago

And Vietnam, and Somalia, and Iraq, and Korea

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 21 points 6 months ago

It would be horrible for American and Mexican citizens. But let's not pretend local cartels could stand against literal all-out war against the United States. They also can't win against all-out war from the Mexican government.

The only way they survive is by carving out their own little area, and digging in. Oh, and the US and others importing illegal drugs. You really want to destroy the cartels? Legalize and regulate drugs and open treatment centers...

[-] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 6 months ago

Legalize and regulate drugs and open treatment centers…

Never happening in Trump's America.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 12 points 6 months ago

Of course it wouldn't be all out war, it would be an insurgency. Except the insurgents come to your home and murder your family.

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 1 points 6 months ago

That's true. But in this context, you're imagining cartel members crossing the border (or paying someone to) to kill citizens on American soil. Not saying that pissing them off wouldn't make them want to retaliate, but would they be able to find out the identify of specific masked special forces members any more than anonymous soldiers? Or for that matter, vs masked special forces members that are currently involved in joint-force missions against them? Or am I misunderstanding the premise?

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 7 points 6 months ago

For a long list of reasons, yes, going to war with anyone-especially Mexico-is a bad idea.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 6 months ago

Lol USA can't conquer shit. Every nation they've invaded has been a shit show and those were basically failed states already

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 11 points 6 months ago

Yeah but they kill a lot of people in the process.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

No argument there, just disputing the "USA now controls all of North America, all the way down to and including Panama." part. Arguably they already do control that part using soft power, but by Trump fucking that up, they might actually lose that control

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 2 points 6 months ago

I’m just stating the goal, I doubt it can happen, especially Canada.

[-] Gork@lemm.ee 2 points 6 months ago

If they do though, they can place all their army stacks at Panama since it's a super small front, instead of the super long Mexico border.

Gotta think strategery

While I'm somewhat mystified getting US news from a Ukrainian military news site (no offense meant, OP, seems like a local source for you), acts like this being publicized widely will fan the flames for the designation of cartels as foreign terrorist organizations by the new administration.

Now, I'm not sure cartel action against border patrol counts as "terroristic" in my book, but that won't matter.

[-] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 20 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

They're just re-reporting something from Fox News.

This story seems to be circulating exclusively through right-wing news. Just took a quick look but Newsweek is probably the furthest left reporting this. Otherwise, it's like NYPost, Daily Mail, News. com. au and a bunch of also-rans of right-wing news media.

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 6 points 6 months ago

In OP's defense, they're the admin of a Ukraine-based Lemmy instance and this is probably a local news source for them.

Though the outlet having the word "Honest" in its name does usually make me pause (same for sources with any form of the word "truth" in them.

[-] ZombieMantis@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago

That seems Ill-advised.
