It’ll sport a flat camera bump

That's a weird way of saying it won't have a camera bump.

[-] ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

The pictures make it look like there's a slight one.

[-] jonathan@lemmy.zip 20 points 5 days ago

However, instead of having a flat camera bar like the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, it’s going to be flush with the back of the phone.

It might just be more poor wording, but flush means no bump of any kind.

[-] ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Oh, I agree that it's funny. Either it's poor wording or... Maybe they don't know what they're talking about 🤷‍♂️

[-] jonathan@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 days ago

In fairness, maybe they're called Android Headlines for a reason 😆

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago

Agreed. I wouldn't call it flush, but it is 99% of the way there. A little bezel around the lens is probably helpful to limit getting a scratch that being totally flush anyway.

I kind of like the color selection. Looks sharp. Would prefer some more definition or rather distinction from the iPhone.

[-] jet@hackertalks.com 17 points 5 days ago

Oh cool, they added color to the area that gets covered by a case

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Oh transparent case (with bump edges) all the way for me. They go a little yellow after some time so need replacing.

They allow you to see dust buildup which I unfortunately discovered on my last phone starts to cause lots of little micro scratches over time.

[-] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

Having to replace them is why I don't like them, just seems wasteful.

I have a few cheapy cases. I have a dark one for when I need to look nicer so the phone doesnt stand out. I've got a clear one (white phone) and I've got a bright red one as well. The red one is extra grippy and the brightest color and I use that one when I'll be in the woods or taking a lot of pics so I don't drop it, and if I do it will stand out. All cases around $10 and have kept my phone looking nice. I've also printed out cool backgrounds like a Samauri Jack one that I threw under the clear case on my old phone, but the ink eventually stained the case.

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

so I don’t drop it, and if I do it will stand out.

That is actually genius.

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

There is method to my madness! 🤪

Also just works well when putting my phone down random places or near someone else's phone. I can always spot it much faster with a louder color case. Then I have the dark one for when a neon color phone would look too out of place or just draw unwanted attention like an event or nice dinner.

It just adds a layer of flexibility that I find worth the price of a cheap case.

[-] neatobuilds@lemmy.today 2 points 5 days ago

My wife decorated the back of her phone with stickers and got a clear case over it, looks pretty neat

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Oh that's a great idea.

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Remember when we didn't put cases on phones? I kind of wish that trend would come back. Some phones are absolutely gorgeous and slapping an ugly case on it just ruins it.

One of the problems is that phones are so goddamn thin and slippery nowadays that it's hard to grip them without.

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago

If they weren't all so slippery these days. And heavy.

[-] synapse1278@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago

You mean that making phones that are heavy, slippery, breakable glass all around isn't the greatest design choice and that we have invented more durables, lightweight, shock resistant materials we use to make phones with but we have stopped doing that just for profit? Hum... 🤔

[-] falidorn@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Caseless for the 4 years I’ve had this phone. Just don’t be reckless with it and don’t let your kids play with it.

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago

Let me introduce you to myself. Glass phone with regularly dry hands. If I had no case this thing would fly out of my hands all the time.

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I'd love to rock my phone caseless, but yeah they are just too goddamn thin slippery for me. I know you can wrap the phone in a decal to make it less slippery, but at that point you're still covering the look of the phone anyway.

Plus, due to the type of phone I have, I seem to require a particular case for reasons that other people don't necessarily need. Ex: my phone case has this sort of ring attachment that is much smaller than a pop socket that has become essential for me. I don't have a way to attach it to my phone directly.

[-] ekZepp@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

Should we call this trend the Iphonification?

[-] sudoku@programming.dev 7 points 5 days ago

which part do you mean?

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

I see what you mean. I personally found the camera bump design they have on the Pixels pretty ugly tbh.

In general, whenever a phone has a huge camera bump, it seems to essentially require that you put a case on it. Otherwise it rocks all over the place when you try to lay it flat. Idk.

[-] smeg@feddit.uk 5 points 5 days ago

I know all phones basically look the same nowadays, but those pics really did remind me of this classic

[-] Deconceptualist@lemm.ee 10 points 5 days ago

Still haven't brought back the 3.5 mm headphone jack? And is that big battery replaceable (i.e. without anything stupid like ungluing it from the delicate touchscreen)?

Any coverage that omits these things is garbage IMO.

[-] parpol@programming.dev 5 points 5 days ago

Been waiting for either 8a to drop in price or for 9a to come out. My old phone is 10 years old and barely hanging on, so hopefully grapheneOS adds support for 9a rather quickly.

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

My old phone is 10 years old

Props to you. That's some value you got. I got 5 out of my last one with Lineage and thought I was doing well.

[-] cron@feddit.org 5 points 5 days ago

The black and white versions look OK, but the red and blue look really odd.

[-] EtnaAtsume@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Eh, I have a pixel 7 that I upgraded to from a Galaxy S10 in early 2024 and I dunno, it doesn't feel that great. Hard to get hype for yet another phone model.

[-] mrodri89@lemmy.zip 0 points 4 days ago

I hope people boycott Google and Apple phones this year. Hail Korean Phones.

Even though sadly google still underneath it all like a stalker. :(
