Who's going to conduct the studies they are suggesting? They are firing all the trainees who would have done data collection and who would sign up for a job now that you know you might not only get fired with zero notice, the dismissal letter will state that you have performance issues, so you won't have credibility to get a new job.
He already knows the answer - just need to have an intern write up the justification.
