It's called the "loose the five lowest and hope for the best but you actually draw two 2's and two 4's because fuck you" hand

[-] Foxfire@pawb.social 49 points 6 days ago

Annoying. It's just full house bait, but whatever pair you choose to discard, you better believe you'll get the third card for it on your next draw.

[-] Smokeydope@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

You are spot on. At that point the game is sending a message which could be interpreted as "Go Fuck Yourself". I always play chicken and double down on the full house play even if it fucks the run. Gotta hedge the bets and discard two of the lowest value pairs out of the four pairs just to bait statistics into maybe giving you a third of the higher two remaining pairs.

[-] Ziglin@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Or the if you have fewer of the higher cards remaining discard those instead.

At some point I considered editing the comment to include the "or if really desperate with few hands peek the deck for pairs with most cards likely to pay out" but just.. didn't. So congratz you are correct, usually its not necessary but I find myself peeking more and more as I climb up to gold stake

you better believe you'll get the third card for it on your next draw.

Would be great if that happened to me

[-] Foxfire@pawb.social 2 points 4 days ago

You want the third card for the pair you just discarded? I'll trade my luck for yours if you want it!

[-] rockerface@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah, full house from two pairs is a bait. I only go for them when I happen to draw a three of a kind (or when my deck is already skewed towards it), since finding a random pair is much more consistent.

Not full house, not a straight.

"I do not appreciate"

[-] dickalan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

No, don’t touch me there, this is my no no pair

Sounds like you need the Skipping Straught Joker and the one that let's you make straights with 4 cards instead of 5.

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 5 points 5 days ago

Shortcut & Four Fingers.

I've been trying to learn the actual names of the jokers instead of just describing them.

...it's difficult.

[-] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

I agree. It's funny, though. I remember the original 151 pokemon without trouble. This new 150 data set, however... I'm gonna struggle in another 30 years.

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 2 points 5 days ago

I think my issue is they're so similar. The difference between Spiteful, Wrathful, Crazy, etc. is very minimal compared to Bulbasaur and Mr. Mime.

I call this one "I wish negative playing cards were a thing". Though with mods, they are, I think.

Check out Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers! It's a blackjack Roguelike, and has all kinds of crazy cards, including negatives

[-] Object@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

That reminds me, I really got to check out the mods.

Pair-stairs evens only. Too bad that isn't a real hand in anything. Though "stairs" or "ladders" or (boring) "sequences of pairs" are valid in some climbing games including the commercial version, Tichu.

Man, a tichu mod of balatro would be wild!

[-] Tai@lemm.ee 3 points 6 days ago

I always call it four pair.

Skip straight: Also called alternate straight, Dutch straight, skipper, or kangaroo straight, Cards are in consecutive order, skipping every second rank (example 3-5-7-9-J).

Oh, except you only have 4...
