I used walnut for the box and handcut dovetails for the joinery. I had triangular offcuts that I glued together to make the lid.

I made this a few years ago so I can't remember if I used handtools or a table saw to dimension the wood.

The finish is pure Tung Oil.

Thanks for reading!

Was there a plan for how you laid out the top pieces? I like it. I'm an asymmetrical, kinda guy.

Nope, I just grabbed them all in my hand and repeatedly placed them down until an interesting pattern was created.

Once I found something that I liked I glue them together.

Wow, that looks fantastic! I like the light/dark pattern, almost like piano keys.

Also, I didn't immediately see which community this post was from, and for a second or two I thought it was a little piece of cake from one of the foodie comms. It does look delicious...

Thank you very much!

Now that I think about it, it does kinda resemble a nice looking cake. :)

I can think of worse cake flavors than walnut and maple.

Excellent work, friend! The micro bevels and the dovetails really take this box from good to great. I really dig that funky lid too, thanks for sharing!

Lovely! Does the top just slot into the body?

[-] fujiwood@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Thanks! Yes about 1/3rd of the lid sits inside the body.

I made rabbets for the lid to sit on.
