"Saving taxpayers money", by forcing them to drive everywhere.

[-] markinov@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 3 weeks ago

And the import of cars is tariffed as well

[-] 666@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 3 weeks ago

I'm so fucking tired of "saving taxpayer money".

Yaaay, you saved money to funnel into corporations and rich people! Wooooo!

[-] NikkiB@lemmygrad.ml 26 points 3 weeks ago

"Pleased to announce we're saving you hundreds this year by not paying the gas bill."

Is US kind of like pre partition Poland where nobility had so much rights and feds so little it would derail any positive developments

[-] cayde6ml@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago

Pretty accurate. I'm Texan, and you nailed it.

[-] REEEEvolution@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

First texan partition when?

[-] reaper_cushions@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago

So, what are y'all gonna do with those 18 cents that will surely fund theur way back into your pockets?

[-] knfrmity@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 3 weeks ago

Drive one mile and be thankful Texans don't have to live under the tyranny of passenger rail existing in their state.

Honestly, give up on the US. You know China will overtake it in a few decades. Get ready to move.

[-] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 22 points 3 weeks ago

A few decades? By what metric has China not already overtaken the US? They have better quality of lives, more industrial output, a more advanced military, a higher population, a more competent and moral government. The only thing China doesn't beat the US in is things like prison population, and imperialist control over other nations. And the on paper GDP numbers which for America are mostly just financialized bullshit and landlordism.

[-] rigor@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

Things are so much more expensive in the US that, when you adjust for purchasing power parity (PPP), China has a GDP PPP of 1.25 times the US. Source? The CIA.

GDP is still flawed even when accounting for costs, but it goes to show how behind the US is.

[-] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yup i mean my income would be quite good in China, but in America im fucking destitute. lol.

[-] rigor@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

It's also important to consider GDP and GDP PPP doesn't consider unpaid labor. Housework, taking care of kids, etc. if it's not paid. I don't have any metrics on this, but in China it's extremely common for families to be more tight knit compared to the US with the atomic (parents/kids) family. There is also a lot of unpaid work, such as grandparents taking care of the kids instead of a babysitter. Not only does this on one hand reduce GDP, but it's socially preferable in that there is more of a familial social safety net on top of the public/governmental one.

[-] rigor@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago

Keep in mind that's just high speed rail (HSR). China has an even more extensive network of regular rail, which millions use. The rail system is also indispensable for transporting goods efficiently, and with green potential since they are electric.

I am earnestly surprised such a thing even got proposed in texas
