A whole bunch of libertarians are about to find out what the unregulated "free market" for food is like.

And when they get sick and/or die, someone make sure that they know its their own fault for not doing enough research before eating.

[-] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago

They knew this over a hundred years ago when Upton Sinclair reported on it and motivated the government to found the FDA. It made everyone more disgusted about what was in their food rather than the cost of human misery workers paid to produce it. Why do people forget the lessons of the past?

Why do people forget the lessons of the past?

All the people that would normally slap them upside their head die off.

[-] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 3 months ago

A lot of those types don't forget. They just think that now that the issue is gone(even when it isn't) the organizations are "government overreach" now.

And that it'll be idiots who die from not being safe etc not them

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Memory is short. Enough generations have passed that people only see the "awful" taxes required to maintain things like inspections. Wonder how many generations have to pass before they decide they are needed again. It is similar to how those who remember the horrors of smallpox and polio are all pretty much dead now.

When the FDA is abolished, will Kinder Surprise eggs be legal?

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Sure, but we won't be able to afford them because of the tarrifs....

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

If we are going back to member land, can we at least get that Heroin/Cannabis cough syrup, Benzedrine pills and cocaine throat lozenges over the counter again?

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

And wood dust in flour, plaster in milk,, listeria, heavy metals in candy, lead sweetener, arsenic in paint...

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

Well yeah, but that's a given now that imports are taxed 10 to 245% and the FDA has been defunded.

[-] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 months ago

Best i can do is watered down vinegar and botulism.

... what are we supposed to fucking do? I can stop eating meat but it's not like I can stop eating altogether. Am I just going to get food poisoning a few times over the course of this nightmare administration? Do I have to wait 4 fucking years to enjoy eating without worrying about getting sick?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

[-] janus2@lemmy.zip 0 points 3 months ago

I worked in an industrial bakery for a while and was so mortified by the cleanliness and safety conditions that I basically only ate fresh vegetables & fruits and dry beans for several months because I was so worried about eating anything that had been under a factory roof

Was it good for my dietary health? Probably, but I spent a ridiculous amount of time on cooking and food prep and neglected other areas of my life to make up for it.

Everything sucks.

[-] Lumiluz@slrpnk.net 0 points 3 months ago

Ah, but now you can have tainted and contaminated fruits and vegetables too!

[-] janus2@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

Yes. As I am insane, I also treat my raw fruits and vegetables with a UV light (not that this would inactivate endotoxins though. For that you're SOL)

Always wash the ever loving FUCK out of your produce and dry legumes.

[-] brianary@startrek.website 2 points 3 months ago

The FDA was already fucking worthless. I got severe food poisoning from some grocery store pre-boiled eggs some years ago, and when I asked them to look into it to prevent other people getting sick, they just connected me with the grocery store lawyers who were just useless and defensive.

[-] Witchfire@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I've ended up in the ER with food poisoning twice in my life. Had to call the ambulance both times, worst $3k sandwich of my life. It's terrible.

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

You should've called your state or local dept of health, they have direct oversight of in-store prepared products.

[-] papertowels@mander.xyz 1 points 3 months ago

That's textbook anecdotal evidence...

[-] brianary@startrek.website 1 points 3 months ago

Yeah, that's fair.

I don't belive the headline is accurate, based on my reading of the article.

It looks line they area going to continue reading the food for safety. What they have stopped doing is making sure the tests are run properly.

I'm not suggesting that this is a noteworthy improvement, nor am I 100% sure my reading is correct. But I prefer the accurate information to the inaccurate.

[-] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Fucking yikes

[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

This isnt good for anybody, wtf.

[-] GrumpyDuckling@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

It's good for shady meat producers who were already doing disgusting crap before. Don't eat pork for sure.

[-] uienia@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Less regulations means reduced production costs for the oligarch corporate owners. So it is good for them and them only, as every single policy coming from the Trump administration.

[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Yeah, except they have to eat the food produced in the U.S. too. You cant have everything imported all the time.

[-] argarath@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

But they have their chefs prepare and cook their foods, they can afford the clean version, they're still protected from the consequences of their actions because of their money
