The fact that anyone who thought buying one of these was a good idea has enough money to do so is proof that we don't live in a meritocracy

Portal and Portal 2 are my go to tests for if a machine qualifies as "an computer". Basically, if it can run those, it's probably good enough to be grandmas facebook machine. Might have to toss an ssd into it (exactly what I did with an old core2duo hp pavilion), but generally I find it to be a good rule of thumb.

Plus it gives me an excuse to play Portal when I test a machine :P

Not just the cost, but the fact that so many people are working 50+ hours a week just to survive and simply don't have the time or energy. When you've gotta pick up a second job on the weekend to make rent, you're probably not going to have any energy to go out.

I'm going to wait until the details come out to get too excited, but I'm absolutely cautiously optimistic

Because accepting the truth means accepting that unless we take radical, almost certainly financially painful action, we're all fucked. It's easier to pretend that everything is ok. At least until we start starving.

The fact he's polling anywhere above 0% is fucking terrifying

They outright said in their own press release it's primarily to increase ad visibility by breaking ad blockers.

There's no scenario where this makes the web better

Be ready for another wave on the 30th/1st. Probably won't be quite as big, but that's when the 3rd party apps die.
