I recently setup a immich server on a mini PC, and can access it through cloudflare etc.

It works pretty smoothly except for files bigger than 100mb (cloudflare limitation)

I have a few questions, if you can answer some please do.

  1. What's your setup like? Do you have any tips/tricks for a newbie I should know about?
  2. What's your backups like? Is your data safe if your house burns down?
  3. Is there a cloudflare alternative I can use that will handle any file size from anywhere in the world without needing to tun on/off a vpn like tailscale?

(i would like to also set it up for my family, but for that is needs to work VERY smoothly, no needing to turn on and off VPN's to sync)

Right? That was my first experience too, the interactions and community on here feels great

Yea there's lots of improvements that can be made, you can also try out other mobile apps like Sync and see if you like them more. When I was new I installed 4 of them and I actually use both Sync and Voyager now, sometimes switch between them just because.

Note there is a 500kb upload limit for images on lemm.ee, it could be that.

Alternatively you could just drop the image you're trying to use in https://imgur.com/ and use that.

Been down the rabbit hole, Immich looks awesome. Installing it on my homelab now

I've seen a few articles now that US fighter jets have kill switches in them, so the US could just render them useless for anyone they've sold them to.

Is this true? It sounds insane to me, I've always assumed that countries that buy these jets have full control over them. It's a gaping hole in your defence if you don't.

When promoting lemm.ee I refer people to https://phtn.app/ because if I just point them to lemm.ee they in mass complain about how shit the UI is. (I'm not saying it is, that's what others say)

But saying join lemm.ee and then directing them to https://phtn.app/ also seems weird and dodgy. (I've been called out for this)

I've switched my email etc. to https://infomaniak.com/

I'm planning on move all my media out of google photos but I really like the ability to search by a persons face, or to search "Dog" and then it'll show me all my pictures with dogs in them.

I have 100k photos, so having search functionality like this is curtail.

a big driving force is r/BuyFromEU with 150k active subs and r/BuyCanadian with 300k

They're trying to move away from US products, including tech.

Also the Luigi censorship as mentioned.

Now is a good time to comment something like this on those subs to help guide people.

Try out the European-Hosted Reddit alternative, Lemmy
It also has a Mobile-App

I use it alongside Reddit, and I'm enjoying it more and more, slowly switching over

One of the reasons I use this snippet below to promote Lemmy is that it defaults to lemm.ee and users don't run into descision fatigue when picking an instance

It would be nice if it could also default to eg. sh.itjust.works and other generalist instances

I would love to sometimes filter out any and all political posts, I think having this enabled as default on some instances would also be preferred by some users.

I'm a software dev, if it doesn't require a lot of work I'm happy to make a Pull Request for this feature, but do people want this? Is there anyone I should maybe talk to before starting, or anything I should know?

Edit: I realise it won't filter out ALL political posts, but even if it only catches half of the stuff, it could make the difference between being flooded with Trump/Musk news and not.

Some new users might turn away before knowing the can set filters etc. (which also aren't perfect)

piefed.social is a very popular instance, and I feel it's really beginner friendly, why isn't it an option on Voyager?

I found a super simple way to refer people to Lemmy.

One simple message:

Try out the Reddit alternative called Lemmy https://phtn.app/

It also has a mobile app: https://vger.app/settings/install

This way a user can just click, start seeing content and what Lemmy is about, and if they want to comment etc. they will be asked to create an account with lemm.ee selected as a default.

This should fix most of the onboarding UX issues, and eliminate the decision fatigue of trying to figure out which instance is best.

If you setup streamio it's literally as easy as using Netflix. And it has everything, it's extremely rare that i find anything that i can't watch

It's no longer censored as obviously.

Once it made news they back pedaled

They will now shadow ban these topics, so people can catch them red handed. But users will just never see it in their feed
