This conversation seems to come up every now and again and lemmy seems to split between two camps:

  • students, especially low income students who can't afford their own devices, will use devices to do things kids do (yes, this includes porn)
  • schools, as part of their duty to provide a safe learning environment, have a responsibility to provide some level of filtering and content monitoring

Where that line gets drawn has to be an active conversation between schools, parents, and students. But this conversation often delves into "BuT tHiNk Of ThE cHiLdReN!"

I would subscribe to this podcast. Just knowing a cat was there would be enough.

People are being lied to and then they tie it to ~~ego~~ preexisting prejudices

Whether it's racism, sexism, transphobia....it's lies that are easy to believe because it feels true.

Exactly. This shouldn't be used to store your taxes, for example. But it might be good if you want to post details about your baby shower without your parents getting the details.

AOC suffers the same problem as Nancy Peloci: she's too demonized by the GOP. It's an odd problem to have but she would need to retire from the House for a few years and run later.

If you want AOC-like, Kathy Porter is actually a very viable candidate. The question is whether the DNC is willing to let her actually run or if they'll pull a "It's Hillary's turn" like they did to Bernie.

The way that the NASA program worked was that failure was expected and redundancies were added where they could. NASA program engineers knew that any failure could be a PR nightmare and would result in their funding being cut.

Their margin for error was small but because error-handling was built into the system.

I think there was a Law & Order episode where the defense essentially said they should be tried separately, but at the same time in different court rooms.

And the idea was that the defense made the facts show that the spouse did the crimes. They both got non-guilty verdicts because there was enough reasonable doubt.

I know L&O is fiction but I have to imagine someone has tried this and succeeded.

"If I can't have nice things, then no one can."

Or

"We're going to force everyone to live the way I want. We'll start over if we have to."

It's out of a need/desire to "fix" what they see is wrong with society. They are angry that the world isn't what they want it to be and will do whatever it takes, violence included, to bring us back to their version of what makes a good society.

They have been brainwashed by Fox News and other alt-right pundits. But before you feel bad for them, remember that they were racists before and Fox News, et al, just radicalized them into terrorism.

Why we haven't labeled Fox News as a terrorist group yet is beyond me.

Republicans would absolutely allow that. They are willing to bite their own noses off just to spit in their enemies faces.

How it would play out is selective prosecution where only ~~democrats~~ poor people or non-whites get charged.

White Christians would get a pass at best. Or blackmailed at worst.

I love ZFS but support for it on Ubuntu seems haphazard. It works fine for non-root drives.

I've tried running it as my root partition and just gave up after it fucked up my bpool dataset too many times.
