Very nice. What kit were you using for that, and were you focus-stacking?

Wren being restless in Prospect Park, Reading, UK. A little far away, so the 2x2 contact sheet is not actually losing detail, as these were heavily cropped.

Blue Tit, other end of my balcony, Reading, UK Canon R6 + RF200-800mm lens (at 800mm). Still learning the lens, so managed not to notice had been knocked to F22

Today's lucky spotting of a Goldcrest gives me a chance to show off the pluses and minuses of Topaz AI, which I was talking about a few days ago.

We hopefully have here, from the same RAW file

  • One with Canon Digital Photo Professional 4's default efforts at de-noise and sharpening
  • One with no post-processing
  • One with Topaz AI's efforts

Topaz gives by far the prettiest results, but I do wonder if its extrapolating from other sources, and notice how the left leg has disappeared entirely.

On other shots today, Canon's DPP4 was proving better at post-processing a well lit Red Kite.

So, as before, Topaz AI is interesting, can do great things, but you need to keep an eye on it.

Canon R6 + RF600mm F11 lens, Reading, UK. 1/1000s. ISO25600, so the noise is absolutely no surprise!

Not my best shot, but I'm always pleased to get an even half-way decent photo of a bird in flight!

Nice work -what were you using to take those?

[-] KevinFRK@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Oh dear, didn't mean to trigger people with the wasp. It would be a bit bizarre to mark it NSFW, and there's aren't any other tags, so I can only apologize to anyone seriously poked. For that matter, surely lots of macro work is with insects and spiders, so phobic people are asking for trouble viewing this community!

Heh. It was on its own, didn't seem fussed, I'm guessing didn't feel trapped, and I'd 100mm of lens plus a camera for it to attack before it reached me :)

Wasp, UK (lemmy.world)

After getting jealous from seeing the results of skill, patience, and stacking macro photos in the news, I was pleased to find today's crop of photos using a Canon R6 + RF 100mm macro lens can still do a satisfying photo.

I'm guessing it's a Common Wasp, but don't have the knowledge to be sure!

Heh, the price is not that bad. I mostly do bird photography and keep dreaming of, e.g., the RF 400m F2.8 - now that's dangerous! My normal lens is the RF 600mm F11 on an R6.

And yes, with modern Canons, an ISO in the low 1000's still often results in a good photo.

Which lens at what aperture, out of interest? You have a good shooting angle but even so, it's impressively sharp across the bee.

Jackdaw (lemmy.world)

Prospect Park, Reading, UK Canon R6 RF F11 600mm, 1/1000s, ISO 2000 Almost too close for the lens!

Red Kite (lemmy.world)

Prospect Park, Reading, UK Canon R6 + F11 600mm lens, 1/1250s, ISO1250

I liked the play of sun and shadow in this photo, and that, for once, the Kite wasn't paying attention to me and my poor attempts to get closer.

Young Gull (lemmy.world)

I'd guess a young herring gull, Saundersfoot, South Wales.

I was pleased with the composition and general look, but suggestions for improvements welcome.

Canon R6 + 600mm lens, 1/1250s, ISO 1250

Pied Wagtail (lemmy.world)

Saundersfoot, South Wales.

Canon R6 + 600mm F11 lens, ISO 400, exposure time mistakenly at a slow 1/320s (should have been 1/1000) but doesn’t seem to have harmed.

I also like it as a photo of the rope, chain & canvas in their own right.
