So, by way of answering my own question, I found this map, which lets you work it out for yourself. Interesting stuff.

Which brings me to the question of how to benchmark now that I can make good guesses. Speedtest to US and Europe?

ETA: For those that follow, what I did was spin up multiple gluetun instances, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, hook them to firefox with FoxyProxy (different ports, duh) and compare speeds on https://librespeed.org/. Bottom line was the bottleneck was my ISP (surprise!!)

Still, I suspect there are ways to leverage crap internet to useful torrenting.

My takeaway was add https://universal-blue.discourse.group/tag/announcements.rss to my rss reader (already had fedora) and I'm happy I'll know when I need to, still for those of us who support non-technical users on these platforms it is indeed problematic.

OTOH, this is the first time I've had non-nvidia (sleep broken on my desktop, just rolled back and held updating for a while, no big deal) update problems in two years, which is pretty outstanding for a new rolling distro, and gives me confidence in the architecture. Shit happens I guess, but it was quickly and publicly sorted, also trust building...

Yeah, some dickheads apparently want to monetize and should die in a fire, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Patience usually does the trick, but I need to work out how to filter Private out of search results.

My philosophy is if I can use a web page for it, I won't install an app (couple of exceptions, but a good rule). Less convenient, more secure.

As KMFDM have it, "Those who sacrifice liberty for security Deserve neither and will lose both"

Potentially.

Wise words, unfortunately tags without filters, which I'm unaware of in Lemmy currently, means some being exposed to unwanted content, albeit with the ability to quickly pass over. Still sets the groundwork, and if you're passing it through a RSS reader you can use those filters...

Agreed on skipping self promotion videos but you might be conflating tutorials on DIY BIFL and promotion of products 'inline with solarpunk ideals', both of which I'm down for given a subdued tone for the promotion, good moderation required!, and videos only if direly needed for a comprehensive explanation.

Generally Jackett filters + eyeballs. Searching many engines beats any individual.
