I have a more rigorous analysis than this but it probably needs to be its own effort post.

Obviously this alone won't bring things down. But it is the last gasp of capitalism in its attempt to expand accumulation. Without "innovation" (ie. New openings for exploitation) the iron laws of the falling rate of profit begin to really bite

Maybe it's my 3rd Ed roots talking but Iyanden had a reputation as a "munchkin" army of the most annoying type like pre codex Necrons.

Even compared to the system in, say, Sydney, it sucks. Heck, it sucks compared to Auckland's famously bad public transit.

People with locked in syndrome have occasionally been given early BCIs on this justification, but generally they're already consenting (IIRC the first real recipient of one had to have it taken back out at the end due to ethics requirements, despite wanting to keep it.)

Federation Special Circumstances gets bored sometimes and jaunts over.

The Soviets were very rail dependent and as other have mentioned had wide gauge. The extensive rail transport meant that roads were lower priority. By contrast, the Germans largely Horse-drawn logistics were reliant on roads, especially once they hit Soviet rail networks where their trains were inoperable (the Soviets were pretty good at preventing rail stock capture.) The soviets also used animals but more mules with saddlebags/sleds and not heavy carts.

I'd pour massive amounts of money into arguably crank Bazinga ideas like Life Extension and proper Nanotech. I'd ban all cars and replace with public transport. Thorium power plants in every house! SPAAAAAAAACCCEEEE!

I'd make massive urban farming and gardening projects regardless of economic viability.

I also have Gaddafi-grade western fashion revival ideas. You will have to dress up for all evening events and no a Tuxedo is not gonna cut it. if you want a vision of the future it's an 1700s dance slipper brushing a human face lightly, forever.

I am also for the French Revolutionary calendar. Happy Basil Day!

It's way, way worse than a spaceship. On a spaceship you've generally got enough water and oxygen via the fuel cells to last a week or two, you'll probably die of overheating or CO2 (CO2 is also the issue with a large sub disaster like the Kursk). On a sub like this...you'll freeze or die of lack of O2.

Also, loss of pressure on a spaceship is bad but survivable. 1 atm to zero. The Byford Dolphin was 450 meters down and that was 9 atm to zero. The Titanic is 3800 meters down (0 to 380 atm, the other way round, explosive compression.).

If Apollo 13 had happened on a sub it's arguable there'd not be enough left of the craft to show up on sonar.

Always knew he was High Bazinga ever since he tried to develop his suborbital open top space chair

It was pretty funny. Man is she malding over it.

She seems to be under the impression that a Communist federation of message boards would be for radical free speech and is accusing us of hypocrisy and that makes me laugh and laugh.
