We have a bigger problem and it's popularity. Some instances will want to become as big as possible, for resell value.

So they will be encouraged to let the maximum of people registering a new account, including bots and spammers. Because they make the numbers and they start the snowball effect.

Didn't you all looked a the most populated instances/magazine when you registered magz, and you didn't care about the mags with zero activity? Well, you are encouraging the process in a way.

People will be reluctant to defederate or to ban popular magazines from other subs. So the float of spammers is unlikely to stop, because the person who makes the decision, the admin of the instance, will welcome them. And you won't ban the instance or the mag.

We have to become more like a club.

If you are subscribed to the same mag 3 times, well it's on you. You want volume you have it.

What is possible is to filter through a script and only show the local one.

Have you ever been on a social network under construction? The first people joining are the geeks who talk about geek stuff and the geek stuff now is the fediverse and microservers. It has always been like this.

We don't need anything. We discuss based on interests. Talking for filling blank space is what led reddit to what it has become.

Don't be in such a hurry to see your network filled with people talking for the sake of talking. We will come to this point and this will be the moment when we leave.

I understand people’s concerns with Threads

No, I don´t think that you really understand the concern. Specially if, as you say, Threads will slowly federate this and that server, poisoning the fediverse.

If Threads begins federating, the "ten foot pole" is going to touch you, like it or not.

Independently from what Meta wants, do you want to federate with them?

I guess we will never know since everything is under NDA, right? So this is the end of the sharing of information. I see no good reason to trust an admin who signed an NDA with Meta in this context. If average Joe can run an instance in a container then I'm sure that Meta can do it too.

Reminder about Zuck:

"They trust me — dumb fucks," says Zuckerberg in one of the instant messages, first published by former Valleywag Nicholas Carlson at Silicon Alley Insider, and now confirmed by Zuckerberg himself in Jose Antonio Vargas's New Yorker piece. Zuckerberg now tells Vargas, "I think I've grown and learned a lot" since those instant messages.

If they start making changes that affect federation for them, then that is their problem.

No, that's not their problem, that's ours too. I don't think that you know the whole story. They are not gonna make changes just on their side, they are making some admins of the fediverse sign an NDA too:

https://433.world/@Yuvalne/110566872225488614

Explain the NDA please.

Treat meta as a platform, no different to mastodon.

Mastodon doesn't make people sign NDA afaik. Neither does lemmy or kbin.

If meta makes a change and suddenly pixelfed can't federate properly with meta anymore, it'll be a shame, but it does not mean that pixelfed should make changes and add workarounds so that it is able to speak to meta again.

Not if pixelfed has signed an NDA with Meta.

Meta might think they have the power to do this, but they only have that power if we behave like they do.

That's probably the point of the NDA Meta is making people sign.

I was on board with your position before, until I read this NDA stuff. If the admins are making changes then the fediverse is dead.

If they federate then we can publish on their site without having to sign any legal agreement to anything! Hello lawyers! \o/

But the API won't be open to us forever, right? I thought that it would close today.

[-] PabloDiscobar@kbin.social 9 points 2 years ago

Don't. The last thing we want is to associate the fediverse with some kind of anarchist world where everything is trash and everyone insults everyone. Leave the memers to reddit.

These instances are like pirate ships pursuing us.

But they don't write from their original instance name... nonono, I'm sure that they are popping up here with a fresh duplicate account:

"Hello, let me explain some politics to you, but first let me nuke your reputation with a few multi accounts".

And you end up discussing with a whooping 5 downvotes as a starter. It gives the tone for the other people who want to discuss and see you as "this guy".

I received a response from Reddit pretty quickly after submitting it. The response told me that I must delete all of the posts and comments beforehand. I'm pretty sure this is in violation of both GDPR/CCPA as it might be physically impossible for a user to delete, say, one million comments. Of course, this ignores the fact that Reddit already restored all of the data that I've deleted.

No tool from reddit allows you to delete all your comments. Reddit doesn't allow you to map all of them. You can check by yourself by searching manually in a search engine for your username and reddit.com. You will see a lot of your comments which are not shown in your comment interface.

He had a window of opportunity before the EU legislate against the AI's but he busted it with a useless move against an API that wasn't even a threat.

He could have made another API dedicated to AI's and that would be the end of it. But no, somehow he felt the need to show muscles to someone.
