I feel like on mainstream social media this is done pretty thoughtlessly and it's a norm but on Lemmy, with the much smaller userbase, I kinda felt like... it's like riding on someone else's coat tails? Or is it just me?

Edit: I specifically mean the Crosspost function.

Edit: of course if it's artwork or text, obviously then I'd make it explicitly clear it's not mine but I mean news articles, memes, things like that.

Sorry to interject, I just want to check if I'm understanding this sub-thread correctly. I was skimming and didn't immediately realize what you were talking about:

So someone asked what kind of discussion isn't tolerated.

You brought up people discussing wanting to cut down their personal porn consumption.

You get downvoted and people imply you're just some conservative wanting to preach about the evils of masturbation. Which is a complete mischaracterization of what you're saying.

I don't follow nofap discussions etc. as it's thankfully not a problem for me personally but I know porn and masturbation addictions are very real and detrimental to one's well-being. I'm a bit stunned to learn that you get this much flak for acknowledging it here. I'm sorry to hear this :/

Okay, thank you for explaining.

I admit I don't get it, but maybe I'll consider reading that book. It seems I had a mistaken idea about Buddhism. Or at least Zen Buddhism.

But aren't there things that you can objectively know to be true? Wouldn't this just lead to believing whatever you want to believe?

You say you were "intellectually honest" so I'm curious what it was about Zen that appealed to that kind of approach?

Your avatar is cool and pretty tho, so at least I think you have good taste!

Was thinking of adding an avatar (random image I like off a search) and got to wondering this.

I think it's fine if you're not claiming it is yours. And most people assume that any generic/immediately recognizable avatar is just an image off the internet that the user just likes.

Though there's maybe a weird grey area where if you use artwork from someone that isn't like... a super established artist (hard line to draw) it's kind of iffy. I wouldn't feel right using someone's drawing off Instagram. But plenty of people use anime avatars from manga etc. and I don't see an issue.

Not the most important topic in the world but I thought it was fun to think about.
