We are getting to the point where Israel is having to choose which missiles to let through, which is not a great spot to be in when your population has a very low tolerance for casualties.

You really don't wanna be in a position where you have to protect your civilian centers just on the off-chance that Iran will hit them (even though they and Hezbollah and Yemen don't seem interested in causing mass civilian death and instead strike military facilities) while leaving your airbases and planes unprotected, which are the only functional part of the Israeli armed forces given that their soldiers seem more interested in taking selfies and wistfully gazing out of windows in Gaza and then getting blown into chunks than actually executing a competent invasion strategy.

Yemen has struck Tel Aviv with missile(s) again. Millions of settlers forced into shelters in the middle of the night.

edit: conflicted information about whether it was intercepted or not (you can imagine which side is saying it was intercepted) but it definitely at least reached the skies over Tel Aviv and was not detected/shot down before that point. I'm leaning on the side of "not intercepted" based on what I've seen but it's not clear yet. Apparently Ansarallah will make a statement in the coming hours.

edit2: looks like no hit, though maybe some injuries caused by accidents getting into shelters? it was unclear to me what actually caused the injuries (if real) so I was confused about whether it was a hit or not. anyway, still unclear what has happened and what the target(s) were, still waiting on the Ansarallah statement

I'm glad they don't. Not because I have even an iota of sympathy for Zionist settlers because I very much don't, but because every missile that hits a civilian could have hit a soldier or base or piece of infrastructure instead, so it's a net loss. It's partially why Israel's military is so ineffective despite their enemies being less technologically advanced than they are: they haven't seemed to learn that to win wars you have to kill soldiers, not children.

99% of colonial regimes stop killing resistance leaders just before they decide to give up and stop fighting

Israel appears to be gunning for the world record of "how many missiles of differing nationalities can we provoke to rain down on our country," which is certainly an interesting goal. Maybe they'll hit Turkiye next. Maybe they'll get really spicy and try and get the DPRK into the game.

[-] SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net 80 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

You can really feel the Western intelligence agents going "Oh shit. Oh fuck. The anti-colonialism rhetoric is coming back and Russia and China is using it against us. Okay, let's keep calm: if we just portray Russia and China as the colonialists so that the developing world won't side with them, then our soft power will remain intact."

[-] SeventyTwoTrillion@hexbear.net 80 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Hezbollah recently released a 10-minute video of a drone that managed to infiltrate whatever is left of Israeli air defense and collected footage of Haifa and everything sensitive therein; locations of air defense systems, ships, storage tanks, etc. The threat is very obvious. Israel can turn Beirut into Gaza, sure; but Hezbollah can turn Israel into Gaza, too. Millions displaced within months. Did you know that Israel gets like 80% of its drinking water from desalination? Did you know that Hezbollah can strike any point in Israel with a missile?

I think if Israel is serious about the offensive, then it'll more-or-less be decided by how far Israel is willing to go before it declares victory and retreats its shattered army. If it's all the way to the Litani, then attritional losses will be catastrophic and Israel knows it cannot even hold that area like it's barely holding Gaza. So I think for self-preservation, they'll only go a few kilometers in.

Israeli Defense Minister orders siege on Gaza: "There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel. We are fighting human animals and we will act accordingly."

The Palestinians in Gaza are being referred to like the Germans referred to the Jews in Auschwitz. Absolutely depraved. This statement will be in the history books for centuries so we will Never Forget the barbaric Zionist regime and their crimes.

edited this comment from "Gaza has become Auschwitz" to the above so that it's a little less of a direct comparison, which is inappropriate (besides, as pointed out, there are better historical analogies)

Image is from Vladimir Putin's speech that he gave on February 24th, 2022, announcing the beginning of what he called the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

On February 24th, it will be one year since Russia began the invasion of Ukraine.

And while it's sometimes felt like it dragged on, what a dense year it's been! We've seen the anti-hegemonic axis of Russia and China closely bind together to oppose America, with several other nations joining or aligning with them. We've seen de-dollarization go from a passive, gradual process to one that is actively taking place for the explicit purpose of weakening America's hold on global finance and trade. We've seen Europe fully subjugated, as it sacrifices cheap energy for the sake of American interests. And we've seen Latin America continue to generally shift leftwards and away from American interests.

We've also seen death and destruction on a staggering, though far from unprecedented scale. The number of soldiers killed in Ukraine has been stunning, all for the whims of NATO, and the number of refugees flooding out has only pushed Europe further into nationalism and racism. We've seen the standard and quality of living of hundreds of millions of people - if not billions - noticeably decrease as a result of the economic warfare and sanctions and price caps. We've seen massive protests and perhaps attempted color revolutions, and successful coups. We've seen earthquakes. We've seen climate change accelerate, causing droughts and heatwaves throughout entire regions - in America, in Europe, in China, and in the Horn of Africa. And the coronavirus pandemic has only gotten worse, while governments manufacture the consent of their citizens to stop caring and leave behind even basic preventative measures in the service of capital.

The old world is dying. The new world struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters. And balloons.

Image is of Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, with Sudanese Foreign Minister, Maryam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi, at a news conference in Khartoum.

Russia, China, and the United States have been scrambling for Africa over the last year.

Lavrov has recently been to Mali, Mauritania, and Sudan. Last year, he went to South Africa, Eswatini, Angola, Eritrea, Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, and the PRC. I'm actually having trouble finding consistent lists, he's been zipping around so much. He's reinforced ties with Sudan and their Russian naval base, and South Africa is holding naval exercises with China and Russia.

Qin Gang, the new Chinese Foreign Minister, has been to Angola, Gabon, Benin, Egypt, and Ethiopia - notably, the first diplomatic tour he's been on since being appointed FM, as others before him (in a 30 year tradition).

Meanwhile, Janet Yellen has gone to Senegal, Zambia, and South Africa. And, of course, Biden invited leaders from all across Africa to the US-Africa Leaders Summit in December 2022.

With it being overwhelmingly likely that Ukraine will receive Germany's Leopard tanks (whether from Germany itself or Poland), German tanks once again roll into battle against Russian forces after nearly a century.

Can the Leopard succeed against the Russian army where it failed in Syria? We'll find out soon enough.

Shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia:

The Soledar Salt Mines (also called Artyomsol Salt Mines after the State Enterprise Association Artyomsol that operates the mines) are located in the city/suburb of Soledar in the Bakhmut municipality in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. The scale of the mines is vast. The mines have 125 miles of tunnel, are at a depth of 288m, and many of the chambers are 30 meters in height, The largest resembles a hangar of about 100 meters long and 40 meters width and 40 m height, and has accommodated soccer matches and the inflation of a hot air balloon.

On the 5th of January, 2023, the Wagner Group and Russian Armed Forces took parts of Soledar's east, forcing the Armed Forces of Ukraine to step back and take up defenses further west and in the central parts of Soledar. The salt mine has since become a critical point for Ukrainian defense of Soledar and Bakhmut, utilizing the deep tunnels of the salt mine to maintain a defensive line in Soledar, as well as to keep stockpiles of supplies and launch attacks on Russian positions from their rear.

Latest updates on the Special Xmas Operation, raging inland from the Blue States ordered by Soviet Communist Brandon.

  • The new defense lines of the southwestern salient at New Mexico has been hardened after Blue forces gave up Colorado, surrounded as it was on 3 sides.

  • In the northwest, Blue offensives are making incremental progress into Idaho and some parts of Montana. The fighting is bitter now due to the cold.

  • The massive strongholds and disadvantageous terrain around the Rustbass, of course comprising Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana, continue to hamper Blue attempts to make progress, but the Reds are for some reason refusing to evacuate from Pittsburgh, which is the lynchpin of defensive lines in this area. Columbus and Cincinnati would be immediately threatened by the breakdown of Red defensive lines here.

  • The attempt early on in the war to take Florida and seize the key location of Mar A Lago has been long debated, such as on the purpose of the assault, and its efficacy. When Brandon said he was withdrawing forces from there as a good will gesture for negotiations, we were and remain perplexed, but the distance of the supply lines leading there must have been simply too long to be maintained.

  • Much speculation remains of whether Canada will eventually join in the combat to threaten the northern positions of the Reds, such as in the Dakotas.

  • On a personal note, I'm getting pretty tired of all this talk of the Ghost of Orlando and the calls of Slava Christmasi. And it's pretty fucking obvious which side is shelling the Shearon Harris nuclear power plant.

Supreme Dictator Brandon is sending me to the snowball-pocked frontlines of the Special Xmas Operation on Xmas Eve and Xmas Day where I will be assuming my role of shooting down fireworks and making snowmen to distract enemy fire. Luckily I will only be spending two days there because I'm an entitled millennial and nobody wants to work anymore, and I will be back at home with my avocado toast on Monday.

September 26th's update is here! TLDR? Here's the summary.

Next thread here. Sorry, the threads start breaking down at above 1000 comments.

edit: I've found a number of sources to use, mostly based on analysis rather than purely event reporting. I've kept some of the better mainstream sources, but I decided that I was gonna cut the six most aggravating sources out entirely: NYT, WaPo, Bloomberg, Forbes, Business Insider, and Politico. I'm not yet sure if I have enough for fully fledged updates (or maybe eventhe new material is too much) so I will do tomorrow's update with what I've found so far, and if I think I need more, I will add more. Unless I managed to get it just right the first time, I think I will end up iterating over the next week towards the best balance of lots of good sources that don't take too much time to sift through.

Here is September 5th's update! TLDR? Here's the summary.

Here is September 6th's update! TLDR? Here's the summary.

Here is September 7th's update! TLDR? Here's the summary.

No updates on Thursdays.

Here is September 9th's update! TLDR? Here's the summary.

Here is September 10th's update!

A few improvements:

  • I'm gonna try and include more images, now that I've figured out how to do it on my end without things getting confusing. Namely, I now have a whole folder on my computer dedicated to this stuff where I can put things. A truly incredible development. However, a lot of the articles don't have images, and if they do, they aren't all that noteworthy - think "typical stock image of an oil barrel or a dude looking frazzled at a stock market screen". But still, there's usually at least 1 or 2 images that I can and should put in every day for added pizazz.

  • I'm actually using the tagging system, instead of it just being "ukraine" and "russia" the whole time, and will be slowly working on adding them for the previous updates too. Eventually, you will be able to search by country throughout the whole update list, from the ever-present "china" or "united states" to the very rare "uzbekistan".

  • More consistent climate and space updates. Hopefully.

  • 100% more love for our trans comrades.

  • Adding what you people post in these megathreads to the summaries too. The tyranny of only referring to my own work without talking about anything of the comments you guys make shall end.

On that note: do you have a lot of knowledge about the current state of a particular country (beyond mindless electorialism)? Do you, for some reason, have a lot of knowledge about hydrogen power, or the fossil fuel industry, or renewables, or rare earth mining, or have you delved into a wikipedia rabbithole on a topic and became a semi-expert? Hell, are you an actual expert? If the answer to any of the above is yes, please comment more! There are like 200 countries on this planet and I realistically only have time to talk about a fraction of them on a given day, and of that fraction, only a single article. I may have a vibe about certain countries, but if you wanna rant about the current situation in X country or how neoliberalism is ruining Y country, but you think "nah, who gives a shit" - I give a shit. Some of the best content in these megathreads is people being like "The general media narrative around what's happening in this country is wrong, here's what's actually going on here."

I'll even quote your username in the summaries if you do it. It's a meritocratic version of the general megathread's username list that they do every time. The thrill of a purple number next to the bell in the upper right corner of your screen can be yours for the low low price of a microessay for our reading pleasure.
