The ones I'm thinking of grow on the rot inside birch trees and are hard, not slimy, and very slow growing so You're only supposed to sustainably take every 3rd one you come across. I'm glad at least some people understand this. I grew up in a small farming community in Middle America. I was as left as they come, in my town. Always fought (in the literal sense) racism, bullying, sexism, saw no problem with people doing whatever they wanted to do and being who they wanted to be, this was in the late 90s and early 2000s. None of my opinions aligned with the majority of my peers or my family, and when young was called satanic for being pro-choice, anti-controlling people, pro-do whatever makes you happy as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. I only had a few friends, all outcasts. Today they're all happily out of the closet. Edit: 1 is straight, maybe, has only ever had 1 girlfriend.

Now as an adult living in the biggest blue city in a red state I have found myself becoming more conservative in some ways, having more conservative friends. In large part due to the unwillingness of many to discuss serious issues without having a falling out over some relatively minor difference of opinion in the grand scheme of things, like not all Republicans being evil racist rednecks who just want to watch the world burn. Most of my family and many good-hearted associates voted Republican in 2016 because it's what was on the ticket.

I used to proudly call myself a liberal but wouldn't dare anymore. I'm sure someone will not read the whole comment and swing in here to tell me that's good, that I'm just a Republican at heart and there must be a deeper reason for this, and to not let the door hit myself on the way out -- amplifying my point.

Yup. It's like an actor getting typecast as a tough guy who always kicks ass and never gets his ass kicked, makes tons of money from it, and then everyone complaining about him only ever playing a tough guy.

I'm sure a few names come to mind. But they're rich and stuck in that role because most people subconsciously agreed they should be rich and stuck in that role (by liking those movies and going to see them).

Are most of the people who voted for Trump bigoted shitheels? Possibly. Is everyone who voted for Trump in 2016 a bigoted worthless life? Absolutely not. Not even close. He campaigned on a multitude of issues, if you'll recall. And before that thought enters your head, no, I voted for Sanders in 16 and Biden in 20.

I may have! I read it in a comment here a few months ago, so thank you for sharing. The authors ability to see the big picture as it was happening is to be admired. I've also experienced both sides so that's why it resonated with me as well. Growing up in a small farming town of 2k people, to living in New Orleans, and San Diego for a bit, to now living in the largest city of my home state. I get to see the 'both sides' aspect of it. I have a lot of conservative friends and liberal friends. My politics are a mishmash of my own, as I get older leaning more conservative in some ways and more liberal in others. This article was a great help in putting many of my conflicting feelings on the division between rural and urban into words. There is so much hate against each 'team' and a lot of it is inorganic. I'd like to say that most of it started out inorganic but that's probably being naive. However as we've been through the mainstream internet propaganda machine for 4 cycles now and 2016 was the most blatant, and best work (from a propagandists perspective) so it's my hope a majority has wised up to the most blatant propaganda. But the realist in me thinks this year may be even more insidious, with even more fake grassroots boots-on-the-ground efforts, and a completely new set of strategies.
