The actual scene is very funny too.

SELA: Come in, gentlemen. Take a seat, please. (she continues working on a PADD) Excuse me, I'm just finishing up a speech. For you, Mister Spock. I rather enjoy writing. I don't get to do it often in this job.

DATA: Perhaps you would be happier in another job.

I always remembered TNG as being very stiff. But I've been rewatching several episodes with a friend lately, and I was surprised how many subtle jokes are in there.

Just a throwback to one of the best teaser trailers ever. I get goosebumps every time I watch it.

IMO the only Star Trek trailer that comes reasonably close is the teaser trailer for the 2009 movie.

Excerpt:

Formula 1 says it is on track to hit its Net Zero targets by 2030 after the publication of its latest impact report that includes its carbon emissions.

The report currently includes figures from 2022 as F1 needs to await data from teams and other stakeholders from last year, but the first season that was not impacted by COVID-19 showed a 13 percent reduction in F1’s carbon footprint compared to the 2018 baseline. That’s despite the 2022 calendar featuring an extra race compared to prior to the pandemic.

The sport’s Net Zero target is a minimum of 50 percent emissions reduction versus 2018, leaving 37 percent still to be achieved by 2030.

For those who don't know the Roddenberry Archive: they're rebuiliding 3D modles of Starfleet bridges and other sets where you can freeroam, and sometimes even interact with consoles etc.

Last week I posted a thread about the bridges of the TMP Klingon Battle Cruiser and the USS Discovery being added. The official blog update is here.

What the blog update doesn't mention is that multiple existing locations have been extended:

That showed up on their Star Trek page.

The selections for DS9 and VOY are pretty good. Even though I wouldn't call all of them "the best", they're all above average episodes.

Meanwhile, the ENT selection of best episodes includes "highlights" like Acquisition, Carbon Creek, Marauders and Carpenter Street. Oh well.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Discovery bridge has been added only recently as well.

For those who don't know the Roddenberry Archive: have fun exploring. On some ships you can even leave the bridge and go to different areas of the ship (for example the shuttle bay or main engineering on the Enterprise D). Also, sometimes you can move or activate objects like consoles.

At least Verstappen can't win the title already in Japan this year. 🫠

NASA Earth meeting

Are there also meetings on other planets?

To this day I can't believe that the first regular episode after the pilot was a story about the crew acting out of character. We didn't even get to really know the characters by then. What a weird decision.

The official F1 channel is really putting out some great content recently. I hope they keep this up for the remaining season. ^(Then at least the videos before the race weekend will be exciting, if the races themselves fail to provide excitement)

What a tonal shift from the last episode.

I think this was on par with DS9's Dominion War episodes, showing how the Federation ideals clash with the real world. It will certainly be controversial for being so "un-Trek". There's no happy ending, there's just the sinking feeling that a war never really ends in the heads of those that were affected by it.

The acting was stellar all around, particularly M'Benga and Chapel. [Edit: and Ortegas! Finally she got some material to work with that weren't funny one-liners, and she made the most of it.] And that final scene with M'Benga and Pike just demands a continuation in the future.

It was certainly an impressive, thought-provoking episode but if you'd ask me to rate this episode on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd have no idea where to put it. I'm still sitting here trying to wrap my head around what I just saw. I guess that's war for you. It doesn't make sense.

Fun episode. I lost track of all the references but I'm particularly delighted that they brought up the NX-01 and her crew, and that the NCC-1701 crew (what even comes after the dash?) is gushing over them, like we all are gushing over all the different Trek crews.

An okay episode.

Finally Una got to do something instead of being completely on the sidelines. The whole ensemble got something to do, except Ortegas who slowly turns into SNW's Travis Mayweather: that one cast member that is just there physically but doesn't get anything to do.

My personal highlight was the scene were Spock and Chapel play chess, and he passive-aggressively pushes her to play faster. Very Vulcan.

What irked me: everyone and their mother immediately started calling the First Officer of another Starfleet ship by his first name. That was weird.

Another weird thing was Pike's promotion to Fleet Captain. We've never seen this in Star Trek, particularly not when it's just two ships on a mission. So I checked the transcript of The Menagerie were Kirk speaks about the one time he met Captain Pike. And there it is:

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

SNW's producers were sneaky with that one. I'm both annoyed and impressed.

Shouldn't the logo be flipped because on Lemmy upvotes are blue and downvotes are orange?

"This is irregular. A complaint outside the response period." - those aliens are Germans. 😄

Great episode. Just the right amount of whackiness to not make it too ludicrous. And it wasn't just comedy, at its core this episode had a human heart - no pun intended - with Spock connecting to his mother's burden.

One thing that I realized, once again, is that I don't really know what Una's job on the Enterprise really is. She's barely doing anything. You'd expect her to accompany the away team at the end of the episode (or did they steal the shuttle, now that they know how to steal the Enterprise). For an XO she's barely noticeable. This isn't a complaint about this episode, it's a thread that runs throughout the series.

To end on a positive note: can those costume designers finally get an award please? The outfits on this show are always so stunning.

Edit: I just realized that the episode was written by Kathryn Lyn who also wrote one of Lower Decks' funniest episodes, "wej Duj". She seems to become Star Trek's go-to gal for comedy.
