I'm picking one up secondhand after typing on one at a meet, and I'm curious how people feel about all the foam. Did you like it with the case foam, plate foam, PE foam, all, none? I'm getting the meme aluminum plate and planning on using light linear switches.

I've been speaking to our VP about keyboards - he was curious about the boards I had lying around and mentioned he's looking for something lower impact, as he suspects he's starting to get arthritis. He types a ton, it's basically his entire job to write proposals and emails.

I don't know if he's quite ready to jump off the deep end for something like a ZSA Voyager, and most likely he'll end up trying a mass produced scissor switch board with a numpad first... but are there any other recommendations in between a $100 mass produced logitech ergo board and a $350+ ZSA that are ortho & low profile?

I think she is just kinda the default if you have no imagination - softspoken human female that isn't totally obnoxious.

In terms of female romance options Lae'zel is the only one who it seemed to make sense would be forward enough to try and jump your bones after just 2 or 3 days. Karlach wasn't even an option for me, she had no romance adjacent dialogue at the tiefling party. I wonder if part of that was just how late she joined up in act 1, I did get her engine "fixed" for the first time but it was one of the last things I did and I can't remember if it was before or after clearing the goblin camp.

I did really enjoy Shadowheart's arc though, especially since I generally adopted a policy to not suggest or try to interfere with the companions' quests. Just left them to their own decisions without trying to sway them, and the fact that Shadowheart chooses to reject Shar and Lae'zel chooses to reject Vlaakith (or at least hear Voss out) made for two of the most powerful moments in act 2 IMO. There is lots to like about all three of them throughout their arcs and that's part of what makes them so great.

I'm doing a black/red TKL build for the Milkyway Half-Blade keycap GB that should be delivering by the end of the year. I've never done a full aesthetic match on a build before - I've got a custom red ano aluminum plate on order and I'd like the switches to match too, at least for initial build+photos. I'm mill-maxing the board so I'll probably put these switches in something else since my wife is the main TKL user and prefers clickies.

Here is the pantone swatch of the keycaps. I'm already going to have a lot of black in the case and red in the PCB+plate so if the switches adopted some of the grey-blue I think that'd be neat, but any other mix of red and black could work too. Worst case I will probably just find the closest weight, highest rated all-black linear I can find.

So any good recommendations? Ones I'm aware of that seem well reviewed and close in weight but don't match color-wise are:

  • Gateron Oil Kings (~55g) I have these in a DM Austin on alu and know I love them
  • Gateron Ink Box Pink (~50g) I don't know much about these except the ink blacks are very highly recommended
  • Durock Linear L1/Yellow (~55g)
  • Cherry MX Black (~55g) the OG
  • NK_ Cream, Cream Pro & Dream (all ~55g) I hear good things, especially the pre-broken-in Dreams sound nice
  • Everglide Aqua King Linear (~55g) Don't know much about it but saw at the top of a few recommendation lists for linears
  • Alpacas (~62g) popular mostly for BCPs I think?
  • Divinikey Oni (~43g) I've heard these in one build and they sounded incredible but they seem to be perpetually out of stock, and wrong color

Prebuilts from brands like Ducky? mechanicalkeyboards.com

DIY kits are generally best bought from their mfg's - Akko, Keychron, GMMK, Keycult.

More general retailers will have some mix of keycaps, switches, kits, maybe prebuilts and accessories - Novelkeys, Canon Keys, Mekibo, Bolsa Supply (mostly GBs), Vala Supply, KBDFans, KPRepublic (mostly caps), Kono Store, Drop (mostly caps).

To track upcoming and live GBs, at least for keycaps and keyboards - mechgroupbuys.com. It's pretty dead at the moment but I think the number of active group buys has tumbled recently due to several high profile scandals in the industry (namely Mechs & Co and Rama). Also several major keycap manufacturers piled up huge backlogs during the pandemic that are only just finally clearing up, namely GMK and Milkyway. All of that is causing there to be very few new GBs starting right now, and they can be kind of hard to find unless you're already in the communities of the designer(s) or refreshing Geekhack.

I have been trying to make threads on wayfarershaven.eu, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org and lemmy.world. For weeks. Comments work but links/photos/posts do not. They obviously never actually make it to the instance... sometimes I can delete them, sometimes I can't.

Initially I was just testing on lemmy.world and assumed it had to do with their constantly going down due to bot and DDOS attacks, but it seems like this must be a kbin problem.

It's becoming pretty tiring. I don't really want to bother participating anymore if I'll never be able to post anywhere other than kbin.social.

This thread is an amusing display of sample bias. Only people that want to respond yes and brag about it bothering to respond.

In reality only about 2/3rds of people in the US can drive stick and almost no one owns manual cars.

I've never driven a manual car. I've had people be like "You can't drive manual?!" and then I would respond "So are you going to teach me?" The answer is always No, of course not, not in their car (assuming they even owned a manual, which none do anymore). My parents had manual cars but sold them 10+ years before having me.

I understand how a clutch works. It wouldn't be difficult to learn. But what reason or motivation is there to learn when almost no cars are manual? They total something like 2% of new car sales. If you're buying something like a 718 GT4 RS or a 911 GT3 RS for maximum driving engagement that's great, but those cars are priced for the 1% of the 1%.

Even if you had a fun car, which I do, the drive to work is stop-and-go, roads are full, even the fun country backroads are filled with traffic on weekends, forests are burned down, gas is eye-watteringly expensive if you have a slightly performant vehicle. The time to have fun driving cars was 40 years ago.

Transistor - really any Supergiant game, but Transistor in particular.

Looks like it is basically not changed. I downloaded the data and compared it against US population census data from https://population.un.org/wpp/

Year 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 (forecasted)
Suicides 4.834x10^4 4.751x10^4 4.598x10^4 4.818x10^4 4.945x10^4 5.029x10^4
Population 3.321x10^8 3.343x10^8 3.359x10^8 3.370x10^8 3.383x10^8 3.400x10^8
Rate per 100k 14.6 14.2 13.7 14.3 14.6 14.8

If anything it dipped during the pandemic and is returning to "normal" (although I can't see before 2018).

Indeed, at least that's the idea. Viewing and posting from kbin.social.

By trying to present themselves as the center instead of the far-right, they slowly move people’s’ conception of what the “center” is further and further right. It’s been happening for decades.

At least the actors and writers do or make something for their money. Even if they’re highly paid. The thing that is out of whack is executive pay - and how they make several orders of magnitude more than they should even when they make terrible decisions that cost other people their jobs, and even then when they get removed from those jobs they get lavish severance packages. Being mad a a handful of ultra wealthy artists is misdirected.

What I'm getting at is you can be made a mod from other instances, but I don't see any way to perform moderator actions unless you have an account on that instance. Is there any plan to fix this? Otherwise seems more likely to push people to duplicate communities rather than join in moderating ones that happened to have become popular outside of their home instance.

Or at least make it a toggle. I don’t think this is what the people who wanted a card style view were after, and it’s way more frustrating for people who like a very dense feed.

I thought access would essentially be the same from the app's perspective, just the app builders would start getting MASSIVE bills in the mail? And they were shutting it down preemptively to avoid this.

I was always cautiously curious about the game but am not thrilled about supporting Rowling. Last time I checked it seemed like it was proving to be extremely difficult to crack. I see some torrents listed but they're not from uploaders I recognize and the seed count seems a little low for a modern high profile release. Are there some good/safe torrents out there by now?

I've tried Mlem and Memmy, and the biggest features missing as I see it are:

  • Once you have logged in, search all currently federated servers. See what their subscriber count is on their local instance, and across all instances. Sort by subscribers, posts/day, or comments/day.

  • A tab which shows you your subscribed communities so you can go straight to them (Memmy and kbin both make you go in to your profile to do this, it should be front-and-center)

  • Ability to subscribe to a community by looking at its main page

  • Ideally kbin communities would show alongside lemmy communities, I think this is a limitation of kbin right now though?

  • Swipe posts to upvote/downvote (right), reply/save (left)

  • Something which tells you the last time information was pulled from a federated server - sometimes it would be useful to know that I might be seeing a page which is 8 hours out of date vs. one which was updated 30sec ago

  • Something which tells you or prevents you from posting to a defederated community since the post will not behave as expected

  • Expose options for copying links to comments, links to parent comments

  • Ability to see your post history separated by threads/comments/etc., and messages; from a comment, go to the specific thread in question (i.e. direct link to parent or contextual comments in that thread, not just the original post)

  • Hide posts you've voted on already

  • I don't think any currently existing apps expose moderator tools. I'm not sure how much of this is present on the API side so far but will be hugely important as communities get bigger.

  • Content density. On Apollo I can see ~6 posts at once on any given page. On Memmy or Mlem I see ~2.5. Just a much more efficient display of content, tell me what the post title is, what community+server it's on, how old the post is, how many comments, what the upvote-downvote calculus is. If I want to know the user count or read the blurb on the post I can tap in to it.

More news, more protests, porn on /r/all, but this seems pretty high. There have been a few oddly spiky days the last few days, seems like probably bots.

Idiots saw the explosion of speculation on crypto and a few people got lucky and got rich. They jumped on the next new buzzword in tech expecting it to have an equivalent speculative boom, which obviously never happened.
