I hate assholes that do this. Why? I mean really why?
Your experience is the exception rather than the rule. It's been shown that rags to riches is a myth perpetrated by capitalism. At one time I had your level of success. It was all taken from me when I became disabled. As a Canadian, you have the distinct advantage of at least some social welfare assistance whereas your neighbor to the south has virtually none.
Linux, BSD, and open source in general has saved my life too. It's given my a passion and a love again. Linux and BSD quite literally work better than any antidepressant I've ever had.
In other words, your company is one of the rare ones that runs itself intelligently.
Saying no I'll bet increases the scrutiny that you're going to get.
Optimism and hope are in short supply overall but I am excited about riding this wave of bringing the internet back to its original decentralized roots and goals. The internet was never intended to be dominated by 5 or 6 mega corporations
It's sad how greedy the wealthy have become and even allowed to become. This is why I personally am so far to the left now that I identify as an anarcho-communist.
Are you honestly shocked? They're trying to get in while Threads is overwhelmed by new signups. Hopefully Meta will do the right thing and kick them off but they probably won't.
This is why the decentralized approach is great. If mods get their heads too power swollen, one can form their own community and even on their own server if they wish. The approach lessens the potential for abuse.
Well, more to the point they don't want their identities sold. They don't want to be a product for some corporation. When you are on a decentralized platform and somewhat anonymous, it is actually a greater degree of privacy.
My niche hobby is self-hosting and running my own home computer lab. It's tons of fun. The only thing I miss about reddit is the community of self-hosters and home labbers.
If corporations are gonna be greedy. It's time to steal some of that value back for us. Huzzah!
