I fully agree.

Also, one thing that Unions always have trouble with is that there is no individual benefit to joining a union, only a cost, so you get a prisoners dilemma type situation.

Even in Scandinavian countries, union membership is on the decline.

Personally, I think the solution should be that union dues are paid by a small tax, making it 'free' to join a union. And the unions can provide free benefits to their members, such as legal advice and representation. This will make it attractive to join a union.

Upvote, cause in principle you make the right argument and I think Jasmine is tone deaf to use cotton picking as an example.

But let's be honest. Americans don't want to perform low paid heavy manual labour.

They aren't going to be manufacturing garments in factories or picking peaches from the fields any time soon.

So I have to credit her for making a good argument, even if she chose the wrong example.

Huh?

In most touristy places, Americans are actually desired as the best tourists because of their tipping culture.

When I talk to employees of hotels, bars and restaurants, they are often a little disappointed that I'm not an American.

I agree with this take.

AI will definitely make some white collar jobs way more productive, and thus change the nature of that work and reduce the number of people employed in those jobs.

A good example is translation, where translators are now mostly reviewing translated texts instead of translating from scratch.

This means the ability to read fast and take on the role of editor is what remains important in the remaining jobs for translators.

Unfortunate reality, but headline placement is quite OK.

Perhaps he should.

It would most likely split the democratic vote and lead to a republican victory.

But it will send a message to Democrats that they must take progressives seriously if they want progressive votes.

Sending that same message in the presidential election would be a too high price to pay, but one House seat isn't that bad.

Americans still care about the price of oil, which is set in a global market and where Saudi-Arabia and Russia have more influence than the USA.

Obviously, the extremist Arabs that overthrew their own leaders are also to blame. Where did I deny that?

I don't think you really have a lot of choices to be honest.

You'd first need to get new candidates to win a primary and then a general and the required majorities are lacking almost everywhere.

A more fruitful approach is to actually change public opinion.

It's a long uphill battle, but it's happening.

As a European, I do appreciate Legal as a format.

It just happens slightly too often that an A4 is not long enough and the last bit, including the signature, goes to the next page.

I wish Legal was common here. Or perhaps we could get a Long A4 with a third extra height or so.

The Letter format should just be replaced by A4 though.

Also, a lot of small investors hold their assets through institutions.

Perhaps I am not enough of a tankie, but in a fully equal world, I would expect these institutions, especially pension funds, to hold 100% of equities.

Every family would be middle class.

A young, starting family would have a mortgage and zero investments.

An old family would have a paid off house and a retirement account filled with a diverse set of stocks and bonds. The total value would be more than a million, making everyone a millionaire over time.

Exactly.

Imagine if Coca-Cola tried to shame or guilt people into buying Coca-Cola.

How would that work out.

The guilt tripping and shaming is going to backfire.

To win, you have to inspire people to actually want to vote for you.

Otherwise, they just might not even bother showing up.
