Thanks for posting.

That war cost a million Iraqi lives (calculated by excess deaths). And not to forget all the others killed by the sanctions in the 90s and the Iran-Iraq war in the 80s, where the USA actually allied with Saddam and egged him on to start it.

For Iraq, the USA truly was the evil empire.

For the past 10 years or so, most climate change activity was, in a large part, a massive subsidy for oligarchs.

For those actually interested in stopping emissions, we know that carbon pricing is efficient and actually raises tax revenue instead of taking government money.

It could have even been introduced slowly enough to allow private capital to efficiently transition without subsidies. And by transferring the proceeds to the public as tax rebates, the public would not be poorer and most would even be richer.

Instead, we got massive tax subsidies for oligarchs. Sure, some of those subsidies were relatively efficient. But in the end, they still saddled the public with debt in order to enrich the few.

So no, I am not surprised that they were faking it all along. It was obvious from the start.

I personally think that moment was in 1993, when the Encarta CD was released.

It had a huge amount of information, but it didn't feel overwhelming.

The internet also didn't feel overwhelming.

In 2005, I think the internet already felt overwhelming.

But I guess if you weren't the nerdy type crawling the web, then social media and smartphones were the game changer and I would put the date closer to 2010.

US support will slow down towards 2050.

And not just direct support for Israel, but also the billions being spent to pay off Egypt and Jordan.

Younger people aren't supportive of Israel and the dependency on oil will lessen year by year, while climate change will wreck the region. Ultimately, oil is what drives US interest in the region.

So no, I doubt whether Israel as a nation will reach the 100 year mark and it definitely will not surpass the 192 years that the Kingdom of Jerusalem lasted.

The only way they survive as a nation is through peace with their neighbors and they basically don't have peace with any neighbor, aside from the ones being bribed/threatened by the USA.

That said, for the current generation of Palestinians, things look really bad. It's nauseating how they are being massacred.

I really want to hear more about Cori Bush's plan to take down AIPAC.

It's time to do it.

[-] alvvayson@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 1 year ago

And even if they didn't care about Gaza, do Americans really want a foreign country to have so much influence on their elections and politicians?

Americans who care about America should want to get rid of AIPAC.

Why doesn't the USA or Europe just accept the Jews and let the Palestinians have the land?

Jordan especially has a ton of Palestinians. More than half of Palestinians already live outside of Palestine.

Your question actually boils down to, why don't they take all the Palestinians so Israel can have the land?

And the answer is: they don't want to be complicit in ethnic cleansing.

I once read an expert on this and it seems they only need a very low amount of DNA samples (like 0.1% of the population) in the database to be able to narrow down any search to the sibling level.

And traditional detective work can then figure out which sibling, if there are multiple.

So yeah, the cat is out of the bag with this one.

Indeed.

If you present this option to a full plane, would it really be surprising if half the plane chose to skip a meal?

Would you blame them?

Why do politicians think they are entitled to get votes just because the other option is even worse?

Not an American. If I were, I would vote Biden. But I also fully understand why a lot of Americans won't vote for him.

It's really insane that the police get called on US citizens peacefully protesting against a genocide in a foreign country.

Does anyone know why Bangladesh had zero added sugar?

Could it be that Bangladesh has stricter regulations?

Edit: it seems I was wrong. I thought when I read this yesterday it said Bangladesh had no sugar, but looking it up today, that's no longer the case.
