I hate to tell you this, but fiction is also something people make up.

It goes double if they're using generated infographics with garbled text. There was clearly zero proofreading, and that absolutely means the article wasn't fact checked either.

The bar is so low, it's underground, and they're still tripping over it.

But let me add one caveat: under extreme circumstances, extreme measures are required.

And it should be up to the parent to show that it was indeed an extreme circumstance that needed an extreme reaction, it shouldn't be assumed. There was an undercurrent of catrastophization in a lot of the abuses I witnessed, where a parent or teacher assumed that if a child's disrespect went unpenalized, they'd lip off to a biker and get killed, and that was used to justify corporal punishment. It could have been dangerous, therefore corporal punishment was required. It wasn't seen that the child viewed them as a safe adult to vent about how stupid their homework was, their judgement was not to be trusted and they needed to be penalized as if they had insulted a stranger's mother. And that's not taking the religion aspect into consideration, where you can substitute 'killed by a biker for insulting him' with 'go to hell for eternity for thought-crimes' and corporal punishment starts sounding more appealing.

As far as the religion aspect goes, I actually have an archived article that explains it with far more eloquence than me. I sent it to my therapist a while back to help explain my standing. https://archive.ph/Dre0R

Yeah, I don't understand why people think getting rid of public garbage cans would help at all.

I spent some time homeless, and always thought I was being polite by throwing my stuff away in other people's garbage instead of losing it, but I guess this author would hate me for it.

I don't know of any nearby marinas that offer internet connection. You're pretty much stuck with satellite if you want reliable internet on a boat.

Well yeah, that's the American Dream right? That if you're smart and work hard, you'll be rich?

[-] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 3 points 6 months ago

Yeah, zippo fuel is petroleum naptha. Iso is probably going to be the safest if you're concerned about leaving marks, but also the slowest. Absolutely do not use acetone on hard plastic, it will melt the plastic. I have learned that the hard way, lmao.

Technique is also gonna matter, since a lot of stickers have a plastic coating on top to help longevity, so you'll want to get the scraper under the edge of the sticker so the solvent can directly work on the adhesive. Then let it sit for a moment to soak in, scrape a bit more, add more solvent, repeat. There's probably going to be sticker residue left, but that's usually pretty easy to wipe up with more solvent on a rag.

American culture is changing. It used to be that family bonds were the tightest, and we had generational housing, but that started going away during the great depression when a lot of family farms shut down and people lost the house they'd been in for generations. We also don't like to talk about the amount of generational trauma that came from both the world wars, and that was another nail in the coffin of family life. The most recent blow has been the economy, where both parents need to work and don't have the time to build the bonds with their children that are needed for a tight-knit family unit.
