hah! The 1993 documentary The Nightmare Before Christmas already conclusively proved that Santa can't even evade regular ol' flak

But, you totally can? When you store all your dates as an ISO 8601 string (UTC, so with Z at the end), you can simply compare the strings themselves with no further complications, if the strings match, the dates match, if one string is less than the other, the date therein is before the other. Their lexical order is equal to their chronological order

I agree that it's a massive and unnecessary overhead that you should definitely avoid if possible, but for anything where this overhead is negligible it's a very viable and safe way of storing date and time

edit: I forgot, there's also a format that's output by functions like toUTCstring that's totally different and doesn't have any logical order, but I honestly forgot about that format because nobody in their right mind would use it

there are plenty of celebrities far more deserving of a puff piece like this, but of course they don't have as many zeroes so I guess bezos it is

If regulations and penalties are required, why not across the board??

for thee, not for me

agreed on all counts. I figure if you do that and stay away from very acidic / sugary drinks, it'll do your teeth a lot of good. Now only if somebody had been so kind as to tell me 30 years ago

I admit I've gotten pretty lucky, but so far buying a house has been great for me

Every loop hole has to be anticipated and covered before it can be exploited.

only because judicial and governmental systems across the world are too lacking of a backbone to stand up against big money

it will matter though if a significant amount of users / communities is on their instances, if that happens and people then decide to defederate, that means the resulting community will be much smaller. Perhaps even so much smaller that it will eventually become a ghost town. It wouldn't be the first time something like that happens!

given that we know Meta is not to be trusted at all, it stands to reason to never allow them to grow big enough inside the fediverse that the aforementioned scenario could happen

[-] fiah@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

I know people are afraid that doing so will ruin the “secret club” vibe going on here

no that's trivializing the risk that Meta poses to the fediverse. They won't just ruin the "secret club" vibe, they'll destroy the fediverse entirely. They are the existential threat that the fediverse faces right now, if we fail to defend ourselves against it then that's it, it's gone, we'll have to start over again
