I guess an hour just isn't a long time to me, I don't have a lot of time to play games so I tend to plan ahead. I use the PS app to download games to my console remotely. With the numbers you're saying, are you really suggesting that you've got something like 20-40 games that you need to be able to play at a moment's notice? I'm honestly not trying to criticise I just can't relate.

I'm not going to defend the Pro exactly, but out of curiosity what is your usecase for needing so much storage on a console? Multiple users? Bad Internet? I feel like I have a max of 1-3 active games at a time, and can just delete and download/install them as needed. Works just fine for me so I feel like something else must be going on.

Reminds me of the UK's Government Digital Services, who want to digitise government processes but also have a responsibility to keep that service as accessible and streamlined as possible, so that even a homeless person using a £10 phone on a 2G data service still has an acceptable experience.

An example. Here they painstakingly remove JQuery (most modern frameworks are way too big) from the site and shave 32Kb off the site size.

Ultimate Guitar Tabs. After spending years getting a community to contribute to one of the best music resources on the web, they turn around and lock all but the most basic features behind a pay wall.

In additional to the other comment, I think there's also a traditional fear of corruption in open source. If the code is public then malicious parties are free to read and take advantage of holes in the security. Secondly it would be possible to contribute code with secret functionality that goes unnoticed. These are fairly easily debunked but seem to remain in people's heads.

RoR will always have a special place in my heart, but yeah... DHH sure does have opinions. What possible justification is there for removing it when it's already there? Guess someone could just shift the types out to DT.

Edit: So I read his blog post about it. He's dropping it because he just doesn't like it and he's allowed to not like it. Okay then 🤷

What Typescript drama is there? It's fantastic. It's been an industry standard for years. In my anecdotal experience the only people that hate it are juniors who did pure JS at their bootcamp and seniors that have refused to learn anything for the last 5 years.

Despite being a techie myself, I'm frequently irritated by how much technical conversation there is on here. I seem to see comments all the time that use some unrelated computer programming concept as a metaphor or a similar non sequitur. It reeks of intellectual elitism and is just a reminder of what a small community we still are. I kind of miss the amount of 'normal' people on reddit with more varied interests. That said, generally speaking the quality of conversation on here is really high which is amazing.

I agree with you, but you may be missing the point - this recommendation is sponsored, so likely it wouldn't have been recommended unless the artist paid.
